Unit 4:
Health and Safety in Scientific
Organisations
A: UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH AND SAFETY IN
SCIENTIFIC ORGANISATIONS
AJMAL SHEKEB NOORMAL
, Health and Safety in Scientific Organisations
Introduction
I'm a member of a government health and safety inspection team. My team leader has
assigned the team to visit a variety of science organisations and report on the organisations'
health and safety practises. I need to choose an appropriate organisation to inspect. I'll pay a
visit to their facility, where the goods are mass-produced. I'll also inspect the organisation’s
research and development facility. I will write a report detailing how the two departments in
the chosen organisation adhere to relevant health and safety legislation, as well as describing
the hazards that exist and how they are managed.
The Francis Crick Institute and Acland Burghley School Science Department are the two
organisations I've chosen to inspect. I'll look at their health and safety procedures and
compare them to one another. The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research
organisation that collaborates with organisations from academia, medicine, and industry to
develop new ways to understand life.
Health and Safety in the Crick
The Crick has four health and safety aims:
1. To provide and maintain a safe working environment
2. To facilitate science
3. To achieve best practice in health and safety
4. To ensure legal compliance
This organisation is responsible for ensuring that any risks related with biosecurity or the use
of biological agents are properly handled in order to avoid, control, and minimise threats to
human health, the environment, and animal welfare. The Control of Substances Hazardous to
Health Regulations and the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations,
among others, have been developed to ensure compliance with key UK health and safety
regulations and safety standards. (Francis Crick Institute, 2022)
The Safety, Health, and Sustainability (SHS) Team will provide direction and information to
individuals responsible for implementing this policy.
This organisation seeks to reach the greatest standards of safety, health, and sustainability in
accordance with its goal to be a world-leading centre for biomedical research and innovation,
as guided by the following principles.
The organisation:
Provides a working environment that meets high standards of safety, health and
sustainability for all employees
Fulfils its legal and moral obligations for protecting the health and safety of all
employees, visitors, neighbours and the wider community
Conducts its operations with minimal adverse impact on the environment
Conducts its activities in the most effective and sustainable way beyond legal
requirements with a vision to achieving best practice in terms of safety, health and
sustainability
