Introduction


Stewardship refers to a style of leadership that requires leaders to have responsible

planning and management of resources. This style of leadership emerged to replace the

traditional, model that emphasizes more on upward mobility and achievement of personal goals.

Several scholars have established models to describe steward leadership in the context of

different organizational settings. One of the models is the Wilson (3016) model that recognizes a

leader as an individual who manages the resources of another person to attain the objectives of

the owner. The second model is the Block (1993) model that discourages self-interest and

encourages service. This essay will review the two main models of steward leadership; The

Wilson (2016) model and The Block (1993) model. The essay will also critique the Block (1993)

model and analyze the key elements, advantages and disadvantages of using this model in the

A Review of the Models


According to Wilson (2016) model, steward leadership is a model that recognizes a leader

as an individual who is a steward manager of another person’s resources that have been entrusted

to him or her to attain the objectives of the owner. According to this model, a leader is not just

organizational managers or executives, rather, a leader is an individual who has been given the

responsibility to manage, sustain or develop another person’s resources (Matherne, 2015). The

Wilson (2016) model argues that organizations need to develop steward leaders by transforming

the beliefs of those people in the organization so that they can share the same beliefs as the

steward leader (Subramanian, 2018). This makes a steward leader’s job much easier within the
