Keeping It Cool
The Calibration of Thermometers and Cooling Curve of Stearic Acid
Report 1-The Evaluation of The Accuracy of Calorimetry
Introduction: Calorimetry is the science of the defined change in energy of a system in energy
which is calculated by the heat exchange of the system with the atmospheres. Stearic acid is a
substance that has been utilized over an extended period for several types of stuff, which has
been included in cosmetics and hygiene products such as, for instance, soap or shampoo.
Stearic acid is similarly known to be stated as ‘fatty acid’ which is obtained from animal fats
or vegetables.
In this experiment, the calorimeter technique has been applied to study the cooling curve of a
solid substance. A calorimeter is a glass beaker that can be utilized with a thermometer- used
to measure the temperature for the duration of the reaction of which the heat is exchanged
with the peripheral environment. (“Calorimetry cooling curve assignments - Keeping up
the ...”) (“Calorimetry cooling curve assignments - Keeping up the ...”) (“Calorimetry cooling
curve assignments - Keeping up the ...”) There are two separate types of thermometers, which
have been used throughout the experiment (digital-based, alcohol-in-glass based, and
mercury-based thermometer). Every single thermometer has its value and purpose.
(“Calorimetry cooling curve assignments - Keeping up the ...”)
Aim: The experiment aims to determine physical changes and temperature change and study
cooling curves using stearic acid and find the accuracy of the thermometers through
calibration.
Hypothesis: The prediction is that as the time increases upwards, the temperature decreases
downwards.
Equipment:
250cm3 Beaker, Alcohol-in-Glass Thermometer, Clamp, Boiling tube with compact stearic
acid, Bunsen Burner, Tripod, Heatproof Mat, Gauze, Mercury thermometer, and Digital
Thermometer.
Health and Safety Procedures:
*Wear lab coats in the lab to avoid chemicals and chemical stains going on the clothes
*Wear goggles to prevent eye irritation and damage
*Handle apparatus carefully
*Read the procedures carefully and thoroughly before starting the experiment
*Report any injury and damaged apparatus to the observer
*Kettle containing boiling water should be managed with care
*Damaged or broken apparatus could cause students to injure and cut themselves
consequently, it should be cleaned up as soon as possible (“Calorimetry cooling curve
assignments - Keeping up the ...”) (“Calorimetry cooling curve assignments - Keeping up
