(P7) Explain how scientific information in a workplace laboratory is
recorded and processed to meet the needs of the customer and to
ensure traceability.

Traceability
Unique computer logins allow data to be shared with the correct audience, this prevents data
from going into the wrong hands and can stop security breaches. Critical and sensitive data can
only be accessed by people who we allowed by the company too. Using unique computer logins
can also help track down who accessed certain data if there was a breach you can track back to
who logged in.
Records
Records can be stored either in physical form or electronical, although electronical are easier to
use, organise, trace and share.
When booking a sample, the recording system will begin, a sample will be given a unique
sample identification number is where each sample is given a complex sequence of number or
letters which will be used to help trace the sample though out the process.
The sample will then be set off to the lab and the unique sample identification number will be
typed in to the system and recorded at which step of the process it is in. once the results of the
sample are in the results are typed up on the system and a report will be sent back to the
sample owner. When the doctor receives the report, they can once again use the unique
sample identification number to link the report to the patient and give them the results.
By recording every step, the sample takes it is easy to keep track of it and ensure they do not
get mixed up
If records are physical, they may be scanned and uploaded to become an electronic copy.
Laboratory information management system (LIMS)
LIMS is software that allows you to effectively manage samples test results and associated data
to improve lab productivity. It traces and records large sets of data for a lab.
Types of data recorded
 Customer details like name, date of birth, national insurance number all things that are
very sensitive personal data.
 Product details like the name and composition of the medicines prescribed
 Manufacturing data like their name, price and bank details.
 Warehouse details like quantity stored, different products and location.
 Standard operation procedures to ensure they are available when a technician looks up
anything.
 Sample details like results and unique sample identification number

Storage and retrieval of information
Large scientific databases can store data like DNA sequencing, healthcare records, population
surveys and fingerprints. These can all be uses to track a person in situations like a crime. So, it
is very important data like this is organised very clearly and is easy to search through it.
Data can be used to create a personalised healthcare treatment, checking the quality of existing
data and for genetic engineering so constant accessibility has to be ensured.
Storing large sets of data
With access to larger sets of data comes to advantage of being able to reach wider conclusions
in research such as effect of a certain medicine. It gives researcher access to relevant
information.
Issues with bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is the storage and analysis of biological data. Issues like confidentiality and ethics
can come into play. Where customers revealed information to a doctor it is confidential and if
that data is shared else where it is a breach so it is very important that no one can access that
information unless they have the valid credentials. Also ethics, where the data can be used in
research purposes but the customer didn’t allow to data to be shared.

data sets and the potential issues and benefits.
Covid-19 or coronavirus took over the world in 2020. The laboratories have been overloaded
with Coronavirus based records. This is why they need a large, secure and organised way to
store data.
In the UK the NHS established the NHS Covid-19 Data Store. This data store can be accessed by
the NHS and the government to allow to view trends and monitor the spread of the virus. Data
such as; hospital bed capacity/usage, number of ventilators. Both NHS and Public Health
England provided data to this database including, lab results data, hospitalisation surveillance
system data and much more confidential and personal data from each patient.
