This is the Assignment C from the TEFL Academy Level 5 course (Qualifi). This consists of the Evaluation of the Course Book, Authentic Text, Activities, Essay, and Bibliography. I scored a MERIT for the Assignment. Good luck and happy teaching!
Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
Having read, The Cutting Edge Advanced coursebook, I have concluded that it is a professionaly
designed and well edited book. Really perfect for the more advanced students. This course
book enables students to work on activites that are well referenced. This coursebook is
excellently structured. The Warmer, Body and Plenary stages are clearly presented, which help
to form the foundations for any lesson plan.
The theme of the coursebook is globalisation and urbanisation, which is definitely suitable for
the age and level of class (C1-C2). Furthermore, as the material is logically structured and
suitably graded, the coursebook presents all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
Additional activities and materials have been made available in the form of audio files,
although these avtivites have not been referenced, they are expected to be on the CD, which
will be secured at the back of the book. Furthermore, students are self-directed and able to
work on their own.
I also came to the conclusion that the content of unit 1 gradually increases in difficulty. The
coursebook begins with continuous verb forms which, I believe for students, are easier to
grasp, and then moves on to inversion adverbs, and auxiliary adverbs further on, outlining the
gradual progression in difficulty. This smooth transition from one topic to another enables the
students to gradually advance as they begin to understand one topic at a time. Providing an
effective foundation for successful learning in the class.
The grammar that is introduced, such as the present continuous verb, is very relevant.
Globalisation is about rapid transformation, thus, an understanding of the verb tenses would
be very important. There are more than enough exercises to allow for consolidation of
vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. As interesting and relevant as the exercises are, the
biographical task at the end requires the students to think about their own experiences as
citizens of a globalised world.
In conclusion, I feel that the students will really enjoy all of the thrilling and exciting activities,
and will engage and participate in talking activities as the core information is presented clearly,
and is very well structured. I personally think that, ‘The Cutting Edge Advanced’ coursebook, is
