RE: preparing a report for Chris North to present to the board of Directors of Strines Stoves LTD.

Introduction

In this report I will be showing my understanding of quality management and its importance
to SSLTD. I will also be making recommendations about the appropriate techniques or tools
that SSLtd could use for quality management. The board of Directors in SSLTD have invited
Chris North for the interview as an operational manager. My client (Chris North) would like
to have a report on SSLTD management and recommendations of changes in the SSLTD
production process. Chris North is a proactive manager and he wants to improve and update
operations in SSLTD.

Quality management is important in SSLTD as this would increase the quality and efficiency
of products. The quality management could be achieved by utilising a wide range of tools
and techniques such as lean manufacturing, Six sigma, JIT, Kaizen, action centred
management and so on.

Strines Stove LTD Business

Strines Stove LTD is a manufacturing company that manufactures metal multi-fuel stoves
since the business was set up in 1985. Since the business was started SSLtd’s production
processes have not changed. SSLtd’s employees are organised in 15 teams with one
supervisor per team. The current leadership style of SSLtd is autocratic leadership as “the
production manager gives instructions to supervisors who pass these on to individual team
members to direct their work”. This also shows that SSLtd has a hierarchical organisational
structure which has different level of management, starts from Board of directors to CEO,
CEO to operation manager to the production manager who then passes information to the
supervisor and then the supervisor give instructions to individual team members, the
communication between employees and the operation manager is not seemed to be
ongoing in SSLtd. The operation manager is on top of the hierarchy list of the organisational
structure in SSLtd which demonstrates that Chris North will have a higher reputation
position in SSLTD than JLR. The workplace is chaotic with metal panels and other
components which makes the production area cluttered. One of LTD's competitors is direct
stoves offering a wide range of branded products and services which includes chimney
products, Range cookers, beams, and fireplaces. The Board of directors held a meeting with
Chris North to hire him as Operations Manager in SSLtd who previously worked at Jaguar
Land Rover Automatic Plc manufacturer. JLR could be used for benchmarking with SSLD.

JLR Automotive plc (Previous job)

Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc, part of Tata Motors, is the largest automotive
manufacturer in the UK. In 2016 Bloomberg survey of the country’s 400 largest employers,
JLR was voted the “The best Employer to work in the UK” which suggests that JLR provide a
wide range of opportunities for their employees which makes them satisfied to work and
their strategy is for long term sustainable growth which is built on its three principles include
customer first, great products, and environmental innovations. JLR’s leadership style is
democratic, they adopt lean manufacturing, quality management, quality culture, Just in
Time, and quality circle. In addition, JLR operates in a flat Hierarchical structure which has
