African Union

Launched in 2002 as a successor to the organisation of African unity.

Was established to promote unity and solidarity of African states, to spur economic development,
eradicate all forms of colonialism and to promote international cooperation whilst maintain peace,
security, and stability in Africa.

The AU has integrated itself with the African Economic community promoting participation of the
African citizens and civil society through the pan-Africa parliament and the economic, social, and
cultural council. The AU consisting of the assembly, the executive council, the pan-African
parliament, the court of justice, the commission, the permanent representative committee, the
specialised technical committee, the economic, social, and cultural council, the peace and security
council and the financial institution.

Consists of 55 African members countries that make up the countries of the African continent.

It aims to have a single currency and a single integrated defence force as well as other institutions of
state, including a cabinet for the AU head of state.

The African union believes that conflict must be settled before there can be a chance of achieving
prosperity.

The African union has a peace and security council set in 2004 which intervenes in conflict. It can
deploy military forces in situations which include genocide and crimes against humanity and can
authorise peacekeeping missions. E.g., the peacekeepers have served in Burundi, AU force has also
been deployed in Somalia since March 2007.

offers bargains with the west

In august 2010 the AU and USAID signed their first long-term assistance agreement to advance
prosperity, peace, and stability in Africa.

prosperous, and peaceful Africa, Agenda 2063 was developed as a strategic framework for Africa’s
long term socio-economic and integrative transformation. Agenda 2063 allows greater collaboration
and support for African led initiatives to achievement the aspirations of African people.
