UNIT 17: ASSIGNMENT 1 - CLASSIFICATION OF MICROORGANISMS

Classification of organisms
Cellular components, including DNA, fatty acids, pigments, antigens, and quinones, may be
used to distinguish between microbial species. Archaea, bacteria, and eukarya are the three
primary categories into which all forms of life fall. Various kingdoms, including protists,
fungi, plants, and animals, may be found within the Eukarya.

Why it is important to classify microorganisms
There is great value in being able to categorise microorganisms, since doing so facilitates
both the identification of individual organisms and an appreciation for the richness of
biological variety. The classification of microbes is particularly crucial since it enables
researchers to study the evolution of related species. One other crucial function for
classification is in tracking out disease's origins.

The similarities between the microbes were used to create this chart. For instance, the
microorganisms have similar structural or physical features.

The importance for microbial classification for medicine and industry

In medicine:
Identification of causes of diseases
The classification of microorganisms is essential in determining the origin of an illness.
Diseases that are transmitted from person to person often include the transmission of
bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or other germs. Diseases caused by bacteria, viruses,
fungi, or parasites may all be readily identified with the use of classification. Disease origins
may be determined by clinical testing of bodily fluids and waste products. Due to the fact
that bacteria, viruses, and fungus may all be detected in bodily fluids, these analyses are
performed.

Eukaryotic illnesses, such as malaria, are often only detected by a blood test. Malaria is
caused by the eukaryotic parasite Plasmodium, which is spread through mosquito bites. The
presence or concentration of certain antibodies in the blood may be determined by means
of serological blood testing. Specific antibodies like these aid the immune system in
combating viruses like Rotavirus. Another option for determining what kind of bacteria or
fungi are present in the blood is a blood culture test. To determine whether types of
bacteria or other microorganisms are present, blood samples are placed on a plate of
medical jelly (agar) and incubated at a warm temperature for a few days. Agar plates may
be used to determine whether antimicrobial drugs are effective against certain strains of
bacteria or fungus.

Analyzing a patient's urine may reveal the bacterium causing a kidney or bladder infection.
Urine samples are wiped onto an agar plate and incubated at a warm temperature to
determine the kind of bacteria or fungus present, their numbers, and the efficacy of
potential treatments.

To conduct a faeces test, a sample of the subject's faeces is wiped onto an agar plate and
placed in an incubator to facilitate the growth of any bacteria or fungus present. A small
