1.a The concept of food security is complex and patterns of food security
vary spatially

What is food security?

The UN FAO defines it as:

‘The condition in which all people at all times have physical and
economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets
their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy
lifestyle’

WFP 3 pillars:
1. Physical availability of food  level of food production, stock, net
trade
2. Economic access to food  even if there is enough physical food at
a national level, this does not guarantee household food security:
focus on income, markets and food prices
3. Food utilisation  the way the body makes use of nutrients: good
care and feeding practices, diversity of diet, food preparation

The stability of these 3 pillars over time  affected by adverse weather
conditions, political instability, employment, food price crises

There are two types of food insecurity:
1. Chronic
Long term food insecurity
Due to: extended periods of poverty, lack of access to financial
resources
Requires long term solutions to address the root of the problem: e.g.
development measures to address poverty e.g. education, or access
to credit

2. Transitory
Short term food insecurity
Due to: sudden changes to food prices (e.g. cost of living squeeze),
sudden changes to household income (e.g. losing a job), fluctuation
in domestic food production

Food insecurity occurs at different scales, from a household level to a
regional or national level

Hunger and obesity exist across the development spectrum

The future of food will be determined by the efficient functioning of the
global food system and by the physical social, economic and political
factors that affect it

MDG 1 - eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
