CHMT3039A:
Mass Transport and Operations (2022)
Assignment 1:
Sample Answers to:
1. The following are some of the important processes where mass transfer is applied: drying,
desorption, and dehumidification. Define and/or explain each of the processes and give
one example of an industrial application of each of the processes [3]
2. Diffusion may be defined as the transfer or movement of individual molecules from a
higher concentration to a lower concentration. However, diffusion is almost impractical in
solids. Explain why diffusion is almost impractical in solids [2]
3. Although the essential features of binary mass transfer are understood fairly well, there is
a rather startling dearth of knowledge of multicomponent mass transfer. Therefore, the
general equations that describe multicomponent mass transfer may not be obtained easily.
Furthermore, the equations for diffusion of multicomponent mixtures are quite
complicated. Using binary diffusivity values and assuming that all components are
stagnant except one of the components, write an expression for the diffusivity of a
multicomponent system. Define carefully all nomenclature used. [5]
4. State three analogous expressions of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, and briefly
explain their utilisation. Define carefully all nomenclature used. [8]
5. Derive an equation for an equimolar counter diffusion through a cone that is open at both
ends as shown in the diagram below. Assume that at steady state the gas of interest
diffuses from end of the cone with a smaller diameter. State any assumptions used in your
calculations. [15]
