Unit 2 – Business Resources

On completion of this unit I should:

1) Know how human resources are managed
2) Know the purpose of managing physical and technological resources
3) Know how to access sources of finance
4) Be able to interpret financial statements

Task 1:
a) Describe the recruitment documentation used in a selected organisation.
b) Explain how the management of human, physical and technological resources can improve
the performance of a selected organisation.
c) Describe the main employability, personal and communicational skills required when
applying for a specific job role.

In order to complete this unit I should pick a company which throughout my work I’m going to use
as an example in explanation and evaluation of all the key terms. I found interesting to choose
TESCO PLC as object of my investigation. I think it’s a good company to pick because TESCO
have a long experience in business and trading. Also I’m sure that it’s a well-known company:
TESCO have opened stores all over the world.

What is TESCO?

Jack Cohen, son of Polish emigrant has started his business at Well Street Market, Hackney, East
London in 1919. At first he began to sell surplus groceries from a stall owning a small shop, and only
in 1924 he came up with TESCO brand. The name came about after Jack Cohen bought a shipment
of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell. He made new labels using the first three letters of the
supplier's name (TES), and the first two letters of his surname (CO), forming the word TESCO. Over
the years his business has grown, especially in 1950-60s, when company has purchased a lot of its
competitor’s stores. That very felicitous investment poked TESCO up on the ladder of success.
Originally specified on food and drinks, company has expanded range of product availability; they
have subjoined clothing, electronics,
chancellery, household appliances, etc…

Nowadays TESCO became a
multinational corporation operating in
12 different countries around the world
and employing over 530000 workers.

Interesting Facts:
 In 1961 TESCO Leicester entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest store in
Europe and in 1968 TESCO opened its first 'superstore' in Crawley, West Sussex.
 In 1974 TESCO opened its first petrol stations, and would become the UK's largest
independent petrol retailer. By 1979 total sales topped £1000000000, and by 1982 sales had
doubled to more than £2000000000.
 In 2012 TESCO have reported
that group sales were £51.8bn in the
year to until February 2008. Pre-tax
profit rose to £2.8bn.
 By the 1970s TESCO have
revolutionised by the way people
shopped, thus TESCO was building a
national store network to cover the
whole of the UK, which it continues to
expand to this day, while also
diversifying into other products.
