Scenario:

You work for the Junior Chamber of Commerce as an Assistant Business Adviser and have
been asked to research businesses in the local area in order to determine the variety of
businesses which exist, their structure and the factors which impact on them.

Task 1: Business Ownership

You have been tasked with attending a business workshop for budding entrepreneurs. You are
required to prepare case studies on two contrasting organisations, which will be used in
business workshop. (Notes as a Word Document)
Select two businesses, one privately owned and one either public or voluntary owned (you must
choose organisations you can access a lot of information on) and prepare your case study on
each business:
You are required to complete the following for P1:
 Outline and explain the purpose of the two contrasting organisations and the activities
they undertake.
 State and describe whether the business is local, national, regional or global
 State and describe whether the business is small, medium or large
 Identify the economic sector in which each organisation operates (primary, secondary
or tertiary – remember a business can operate in more than one sector)
 Explain the sector of ownership (public, private or voluntary) and what this means for
the company
 Identify and describe the type of ownership (Private sector: sole-trader, partnership,
Private or Public Limited Company; Public sector: local authority, government
department; Voluntary sector: charitable trusts) and the advantages and disadvantages
of all type of ownership on the business, referring in particular to the liability of owners.

This provides evidence for P1

Task 1 – Business Ownership
In this task I have been asked to attend a business workshop for budding entrepreneurs. I
will prepare case studies on two contrasting organisations (Tesco and Newry Mourne Down
and District Council), looking for comparisons and differences in these two businesses.

NEWRY MOURNE AND DOWN DISTRICT COUNCIL
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is
a local authority in Northern Ireland that
was founded on the 1st of April 2015. It
replaces Down District Council and Newry
and Mourne District Council and coveres
most of the southeast of Norrthern Ireland,
which includes south Armagh and south
Down. It has a population of over 99,000
people from many towns such as Crossmaglen, Bessbrook, Rostevor and Annalong.
The NMDDC has a mission statement
stating their main aims for the residents
of the local area. It is “to provide
leadership, services and facilities that
are reflected of the needs of the people
of Newry and Mourne.”
From my own independent research I
have found that NMDDC is the 3rd
largest council in Northern Ireland. Last
year, in 2014 there used to be a total of
26 councils within the 5 electoral areas of Northern Ireland (The Mournes, Crotlieve, Newry
Town, The Fews and Slieve Gullion). However, in April 2015 there was major cuts which
resulted in the 26 councils being cut to just 11. These 11 councils are as follows:

 Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council
 Ards and North Down Borough Council
 Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council
 Belfast City Council
 Causeway Coast and Glens District Council
 Derry City and Strabane District Council
 Fermanagh and Omagh District Council

 Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council
 Mid and East Antrim Borough Council
 Mid Ulster District Council
 Newry, Mourne and Down District Council

Newry and Mourne have a total of 30 councillors working towards improving the quality of
life for all the residents in many areas. The councillors are very busy from a day to day basis,
from attending meetings to events, from launching new projects to public speaking. There
are hundreds of people employed in the different departments of the NMDDC. These
departments include the Administrations Dept, Building Control, Enviromental Health and
Technical and Leisure Services. There may be different departments, however they all work
together and have the same objectives, to make the district of Newry Mourne and Down a
great place to live and work.
The NMDDC has many sources of finance. The main ones include government funds/grants
and from local tax payers. There is an extremely tight budget and there is constantly cuts
being made to the finance available to councils. As a result of these cuts, we have seen the
number of councils in Northern Ireland decrease significantly this year alone. This means the
government and local councils have to really think about what the money is being spent on
and what services they are going to carry out to ensure they don’t run out of money.
The NMDDC carry out a lot of work in the community. They carry out waste management,
cleaning duties, housing, recycling, and other things such as improving and promoting tourist
attractions. The NMDDC works hard to keep the local communities within the council tidy,
clean and a great place to live for all who reside there. The NMDDC is a local organisation. It
covers the southeast of Northern Ireland which
includes southern County Armagh and a
significant amount of County Down. The district
will have an elecorate of 107,223. Votes for
members of the council come from the people
who live in the district. You have to be over the
age of 18 to vote for a member of the council and
all votes are counted. The highest amount of
votes will dictate the newly appointed members
of the council.
The NMDDC is a public sector business. Its purpose is to provide a service to the public,
residents and members of the Newry and Mourne area. A business in the public sector is
controlled by national, state of provincial, and local governments. The government and local
authorties control and run public sector businesses. However, they are owned by the country.
In a public sector business, the main aim is typically to provide a service more so than to make
