Unit 6 - Website development
Assignment 1

Introduction
In this assignment, I have been asked to review and evaluate the design and effectiveness of two
websites that are similar in contents. In addition, I will go on to further highlight the concepts of the
two websites in order to describe the purpose, features, and aspects. Furthermore, I will describe
the usage of design principles for both websites in order to draw a comparison within these two
websites. Finally, I will be comparing the two websites to see what they have in common and
produce a summary of what was good and what was problematic so that the websites can continue
to be efficient and helpful.

I have chosen YouTube and Dailymotion as the two websites to assess in this assignment. The reason
why I picked these two websites is because both websites serve a similar purpose. Both websites are
video sharing platforms that allow users to stream, view and upload videos in variety of different
categories such as news, sport, entertainment, music etc.

Both websites follow the principles of website design which involves consistency, easy navigation,
neatness etc. The audience for two websites is mainly targeted people from 18-49 years old with 25
years old and over being the main focus of the platforms as a strategy to boost investment in
advertisements.

In order for a website to fulfil its purpose and meet the target audiences it must accompany the
required features listed below:

Analyses of the features

Consistency & Colour
Both websites keep a good consistency when it comes to contents with slight differences in layout,
colour and few extra features offered by YouTube. Both websites show video contents when a user
opens the page. YouTube video contents are mostly recommended and trending videos whereas,
Dailymotion all the videos displayed are trending videos from certain categories depending on which
one the user clicks on. Colours used on both websites are black and white which gives it a consistent
and professional look. The navigation bar and various categories offered by the websites are placed

, on the top of page on two websites. These are notable features that must be kept consistent among
websites to help prevent the users from getting confused. For instance, when visiting a website, you
always look at the top of the page for a search bar.

Navigation
The navigation system is simple and clear on both websites. Daily motion offers a straightforward
navigation using category and a search bar. The website presents the user with five different options
to choose from, Featured, News, Sport, Entertainment and Music. The search bar allows the user to
search for any content they like using keywords or even hashtags. The user can filter their search
based on the duration, sort by and date the video was uploaded.

Similarly, the YouTube website offers their users with effortless and clear navigation. When a user
visits the YouTube website, they are instantly presented with a range of options on different
categories and contents to choose from. The categories are listed on the top of the page below the
search bar, not only that but the users can also find a more specific content focused genre on the left
side of the page. The search bar feature on the YouTube website is far more advanced than
Dailymotion, this is because YouTube advanced filter allows users to search with up to five types of
filters, upload date, type, duration, features, and sort by. Alongside this the YouTube website also
has integrated Search query, which is simply commands that allow users to search for content using
keywords with adding a comma and the time of the video uploaded. For example, if I were searching
for a movie, I would search the name of movie followed by a comma followed by the genre, which in
this case is a movie.

White space & spacing
White space is used to create a sophisticated look to a website. YouTube website achieves this by
using the perfect amount of white space & spacing to grab the user's attention to essential elements
on the website, while maintaining a professional and well balanced appearance. On the other hand,
Dailymotion has overused white space & spacing on their website. This is because there are massive
gaps between each title of the video making it like a news website without any written description.
There are also odd white spaces between the video the title of the video (specially on the first video)
Overall, YouTube takes the dominance over Dailymotion in terms of appearance and white space.
