CHILDREN OF PARENTS LIVING WITH CANCER; A COMMUNITY.

Background

Cancer is a disease which occurs when changes in a group of normal cells within the
body lead to uncontrolled, abnormal growth forming a lump called a tumour; this is true
of all cancers except leukaemia (cancer of the blood). If left untreated, tumours can grow
and spread into the surrounding normal tissue, or to other parts of the body via the
bloodstream and lymphatic systems, and can affect the digestive, nervous and
circulatory systems or release hormones that may affect body function.

, When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, it can be a very scary time for not only the
patient but also for his or her children. A cancer diagnosis can turn a person's whole
world upside down, as well as turning their family's world upside down; emotionally,
physically and financially. Cancer is one of those diseases that tends to suck all of the
happiness out of a persons' life. It has been said, that many people with cancer feel sad,
and that they feel a sense of loss of their health and the life they had before they learned
that they had the disease. Often, this disease is easier for adults to understand than it is
for children, especially if they are the child of a parent with cancer. Talking to children
about cancer can be very hard and upsetting, and at times, parents try and protect their
children from such situations by not discussing it with them. Being a child of a parent
living with cancer can be just as traumatic as the life of the cancer patients themselves.

Becoming a community

Approximately 2.85 million children under the age of 18 live with a parent affected by
Cancer. In fact, studies have shown that "children in particular have a higher risk of
emotional and behavioural problems" when they are exposed to their parents suffering
from cancer. Thus, it is so important for these children to have support from those
around them and have a support group/community of other children who are going
through the same thing, so that they don't feel alienated pr feel like they are the only
children in the world going through such a traumatic experience. The Cancer Community
stretches across all forums, far and wide, lending support to one another and their
families as they go through their Cancer journey. The aim of having a Cancer community,
is so that individuals suffering from the disease don't have to suffer through it alone.
"Community is stronger than Cancer" - this is why having a supportive community is so
important for the individuals living with cancer as well as their families and most
importantly, their children who have to live through the same life and traumas
vicariously. These communities are relentless and become allies for those who strive to
