employee performance at work. In this report you must:

 Make judgments about the value of monitoring and managing employees (give
examples of businesses/departments that do this well and not so well)
 Contrast the benefits of performance management with the consequences of failing
to manage performance
 Explain the benefits to the business and to employees of measuring and managing
staff performance

This will be in the form of a written report. Ensure that all of your points are well explained
and supported with relevant examples.

Introduction

This report will assess the importance of measuring and managing employee performance
at work. Judgements about the value of monitoring and manging employees will be made,
an explanation of the benefits to the business and to the employees of measuring and
managing staff performance will also be highlighted and the contrasting of the benefits of
performance management with the consequences of failing to manage performance will
also be looked at in detail.

Terms of reference

This report has been requested by Mrs Boyle and is to be completed for 13th May 2016.

Procedure

Areas of monitoring and managing people will all be investigated and evaluated throughout
with real life examples included. Research on these areas will be carried out in class, online
and through my own independent research.

Importance of measuring and managing employee performance at work

It’s extremely important for any business to measure employee performance as this is a way
of the business to track their employees. Furthermore, it helps to increase motivation
throughout the entire workforce as people are set targets and goals which they will work
harder to achieve. Measuring employee performance helps increase productivity of the
business as employees work harder to meet performance goals and this helps any company
remain competitive in the business environment.

Measuring and managing employee performance at work is critical for any company.
Gathering insight about performance of the workforce provides company leadership with
information that can play a vital role in making strategic decisions. Also, without an effective
performance review system, the company may be faced with a workforce that is not as
productive as they could be, resulting in company resources being wasted. As a result of not
measuring and managing employee performance at work, long term effects include slower
growth, failure to reach targets and compromised market position. For example, if Tesco
didn’t measure and manage employee performance, they may lose competitiveness in the
retail industry to a competitor such as ASDA who does measure and manage this effectively.

Businesses are beginning to realise that measuring and managing employee performance at
work is extremely important is a contribute to a business growth and success. Organisations
may use a goal theory or SMART targets to manage and increase employee performance.
When a business measures and manages the performance of their employees, it allows for a
better workforce who carry out their work to a higher standard and this is extremely
important in a business’ success and for the future of the business.

Measuring and managing employee performance at work is also important because it;

Maintains increased employee efficiency – When an organisation measures and manages
their employee’s performance, at the same time they are helping to increase the efficiency
of the workforce. For example, by making employees carry out their job roles much more
efficiently such as producing less waste, performance is being measured and managed well
and this improves performance which is extremely important in business.

Identifies strong and weak links within the company – From measuring employee
performance, for example through SWOT analysis, employee strengths and weaknesses can
be identified. If an employee is strong in one area but weak in another, the business can
carry out suitable training which will improve this employee in their weak area and this
helps improve the quality and efficiency of each employee. Weak links in a workforce are
seen as detrimental to any business and if there are no improvements in weak employees’
performance, the company may get rid of them. This reinforces how important measuring
and managing employee performance is as it will result in a more professional workforce
too.

Improves productivity within the workplace – Measuring and managing employee
performance can help employees become more productive. For example, in a factory if an
employee feels that their work is constantly being measured, they are more likely to work
harder and increase productivity for the line they are in. This shows that measuring
employee performance is important as it may improve productivity within a group of
workers and this can lead to higher sales and profits for an organisation.
