Unit 1
P1- Explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in health
and social care context

Communication is the way people exchange and receive information in the health and social
care sector it is hugely relied on in order for the system to work. In the health and social
care workplace we communicate in many ways like in groups in one to one formally and
informally.

Effective communication and interpersonal interaction

The role of effective communication ensures better relationships at the workplace, allows a
professional to work better at providing a service user with care. With people
communicating well together there will be fewer mistakes made in the workplace allowing
good practice to be achieved. When professionals have a good interpersonal relationship
with another employee they are more likely to recognise good work and congratulate each
other for it and help one and other correct mistakes during practice.

Without effective communication and interpersonal interaction the care providers might
not work well together and the result of this could cause distrust from the service user.
Because If the care they are being provided is not up to standards because the health care
workers will not communicate properly all sorts of problems could happen worst case
scenario the resident might have not been given there medication due to bad
communication between professionals. And with bad communication and interaction the
care they should be providing will be ineffective.

, Informal communication

We use informal communication usually with friends and family members it is unofficial in
its nature and is used in social relationships that are formed in the workplace. For example
using informal words like “mate” this is known as informal words. Different groups of people
use different informal language but this is not used among talking to professionals as
communicating formally is used within professionals. Informal communication promotes
social relationships it is better to build relationships. An example of informal communication
would be two care workers talking about their days to each other using non-formal
communication. This type of communication encourages belongings for staff and staff
relationships. This would be used from resident to resident and staff to staff
communications. It is important in the workplace because it allows employees to give
feedback to other employees and ways of improvement. Informal communication is also
called the Grapevine because it is difficult to define the ending and the beginning of the
conversation. Within informal communication there is something called the informal
communication network which shows the pattern of the communication how it passes from
person to person through one to one and groups. Informal communication is seen as a less
private way of communicating as it is through gossip and information tends to get out easier
because it’s less serious than formal communication.

Formal communication

Even though informal communication is used in health and social care it is important to talk
formally when talking to professionals. For example if you want to talk to a doctor you will
be spoken to with informal words like “can I help you” instead of using slang. This is a more
professional way of communicating and gives a good impression. It also shows you have
respect for the person you are talking too. This is used by professionals talking to patients
about a serious issue or staff members during handovers. Formal communication is good
because it creates discipline in the workplace and is efficient to use and an easy
communication system. Formal communications other name is called official
communication as it’s used by people of a higher profession in meetings. This
communication is slower than informal because slang is used in informal and in formal slang
is not used. It is usually written as well and is a more private way of communicating. In
informal communication things like commands, orders and reports are given out. There are
four types of formal communication called upward, downward, horizontal and crosswise
which is to do with who you are communicating with and who receives the information first.
