Unit 4
M1- Describe stereotypical perceptions of life stages and their possible effect on development.
When an individual makes a judgement of another individual or a group of individuals due to the
actions of a minority, this action is known as stereotyping. Misinformation and individual opinions
leads to stereotyping. There are many stereotypical perceptions of an individual's life stages and the
possible effect these life stages could have on development.
Pregnancy
Whilst a woman is carrying a baby there are many stereotypical views on how the pregnant women
should conduct herself, for example following a healthy diet, undertaking exercise, not smoking or
heavily drinking alcohol or misusing drugs are to name a few. Pregnant women are also expected to
attend regular midwife, GP and other health appointments relating to the pregnancy to ensure that
both mother and child remain healthy. A pregnant female could feel the stresses and strains of such
expectations which could adversely affect their emotional and mental well-being. There is vast
information available to pregnant women, on the benefits to keep oneself well during pregnancy
further influencing the stereotypical views. Studies have shown that a pregnant woman, who does
not follow a healthy eating regime is more likely to give birth to a child who later goes onto develop
mental health problems, or heavy intake of alcohol whilst pregnant can lead to the unborn child
developing health conditions, adversely affecting their development. Whilst pregnant undertaking
regular exercise maintains the health of the mother supporting the healthy development of the
unborn child.
Stress and strains can negatively impact the mother and the unborn child's health. Such stress could
lead to the women going into premature labour, which could have developmental consequences for
the unborn child or could lead to the pregnant women to engage in negative behaviours such as
drinking alcohol as a way of coping, which could negatively impact on both the mother and unborn
child's health. Studies have shown that smoking in pregnancy can affect the unborn child's brain and
organ development, and can lead to premature labour, stillbirth or a child being born with a life long
condition. The stereotypical view is that the pregnant female is to conduct herself in a way to
maintain the health of her unborn child and acting in a way which could jeopardize this is frowned
upon.
Infancy
A child aged between the ages of 0 to 3 years is considered as an infant. Stereotypically, it is viewed
that a child of this age needs to be protected by adults as they are vulnerable and are at risk of
harm. Stereotypically a child between these ages are regarded as having low intelligence, and they
are beginning to develop into oneself, and this period of life should be for play and discovering the
world around them. It is expected that a child is now beginning to form a strong attachment to their
parents/main cares, seeking attention. The expectation is that they should start to attend preschool,
being subjected to lots of new situations, supporting development and growth, to support the child
in future education. Education supports the child in being able to mentally construct an image of the
world around them, supporting knowledge and character development.
