M3- Describe the complex feelings that may be experienced by those involved in or who have
witnessed challenging behavior

Emotions can get the better of us in many scenarios. We ourselves and the ones around us all react
differently to news, behaviour etc. But what feelings may an individual involved in or who have
witnessed challenging behaviour experience, and how will them feelings affect them? Well in this
task I will describe to you the complex feelings that may be experienced by those involved in or who
have witnessed challenging behaviour below.

Complex feelings as a result of challenging behaviour possibly experience by those involved in or
who have witnessed challenging behaviour

Being involved in or witness to challenging behaviour can affect everyone differently. The effects of
being involved or witnessed to sexual challenging behaviour can produce great complex feelings,
compared to physical challenging behavior. But, like I said above, everyone reacts differently. With
that being said, what are some of the complex feelings that may be experienced by those involved in
or who witness challenging behaviour, I will describe below.

Being involved in or having to witness events of challenging behaviour can bring about feelings of
anger, anxiety, upset, depression and guilt. However, they can also bring about positive feelings such
as pride in how the situation was dealt with and improved self-esteem and confidence where the
challenging behaviour has been dealt with effectively.

Feelings may include sadness, hurt, anger, isolation, guilt or confusion. Stress associated with
supporting an individual who displays behaviors that are challenging may lead to family members or
workers experiencing a range of feelings including depression, inadequacy, blame, or guilt.
Depression is linked to anxiety of supporting an individual who displays challenging behaviour, the
list goes on. Feelings of poor self-esteem may occur due to a decreased quality in relationships and
this can occur in both the individual displaying challenging behaviour and the individual trying to
stop the behaviour. Dealing with someone who displays challenging behaviour is not a walk in the
park, its not a case of just putting them in detention and problem solved, much more goes on behind
the scenes. When dealing with challenging behaviour, disagreements across teams may occur
because the pressure of supporting a person who has a high level of need may cause disagreements
and lead to inconsistency in practice. But with some of the complex feelings stated, what other
complex feelings could be experienced and how can they affect those involved with challenging
behaviour.
