grows upon meeting Romeo, courageous in trusting her life and

Nurse.
Friar Lawrence: A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and
Juliet, kind, civic-minded, proponent of moderation, marries the two
lovers in hopes of bringing peace to Verona, expert in the use of
potions and herbs.
Mercutio: Romeo's close friend, extraordinary and overflowing with
imagination, wit, and satire, loves wordplay and hates people who
are pretentious or obsessed with the latest fashions, tries to
convince Romeo to view love as a simple matter of sexual appetite.
The Nurse: Juliet's Nurse, vulgar, long-winded and sentimental
character, provides comic relief, serves as Juliet's faithful confidante
and loyal intermediary in her affair with Romeo.
Tybalt: Juliet's cousin, a Capulet, vain, fashionable, quick to draw
his sword when he feels his pride has been injured, loathes
Montagues.
Capulet: The patriarch of the Capulet family, Juliet's father, enemy
of Montague, loves Juliet and wants her to have a "good" match
with Paris.
Lady Capulet: Juliet's mother, eager to see her daughter marry
Paris, an ineffectual mother and relies on the Nurse for support.

Friar John: Charged by Friar Lawrence with taking the news of
Juliet's false death to Romeo in Mantua, but the message never
reaches him.
Balthasar: Romeo's dedicated servant, brings Romeo the news of
Juliet's death, unaware that it is a ruse.
Sampson & Gregory: Servants of the house of Capulet, hate the
Montagues, successfully provoke some Montague men into a fight.
Abram: Montague's servant, fights with Sampson and Gregory in
the first scene of the play.
The Apothecary: An apothecary in Mantua, had he been wealthier,
might have refused to sell poison to Romeo.
