Storing and communicating information in a
laboratory
In the last centuries, any data obtained was saved on papers, and in a
certain room. They were organized in alphabetic order or in dates. Tally or
tick mars used to be a form of data. These were collected in order to keep
track or record content such as food for ancient civilizations. Tally marks are
unary numeral system used for counting, more used in ongoing results such
as the score of games, sport.
Push cards were one of the first effort at data storage in a machine
language. This was mostly used in last centuries before computers were
developed. During the mid-1980s, they were still being used to record results
of standardized tests and voting ballots.
Nowadays the data in the form of cognitive technologies. This type of
technology are products of the field of artificial intelligence. They are able to
perform tasks that only human used to be able to do. Examples can be
natural language processing, speech recognition, computer vision, machine
learning. Cognitive technologies can work in two amin ways: by helping
workers or by replacing them. It can be helpful by helping workers do their
job better and faster. Clinical decision support systems can be an example,
which helps propose diagnoses, suggest medical treatments, o recommend
patients for clinical trials. It can also replace workers by taking on all the
workers responsibilities. For example, automated voice response system that
replace human customer service agents. Or even driverless mining trucks,
which were developed to reduce risks to human drivers and cut labour costs,
meaning reducing employee pay.
Until a certain point data can be managed by humans, but at a certain
period, when the data becomes a lot and it is difficult to manage it by hand,
proper networks must be used to ensure that none of the data collected has
a risk of being lost by accident (fire).
P8/P8
Some companies have lots of information to save and that must be kept
safely. Using large database is efficiency for this companies. Big data helps
increasing sales and loyalty, improving your prices and cuts your costs, while
increasing your efficiency and productivity and customer service, detecting
fraud. Although there are many advantages in using big data, its difficult to
maintain secure. It can be easily hacked if not well secured, or if not handled
properly with an specialist in the area, needs updated hardware.
, Paper files has a minimum data storage. Yes, it can be well saved and
sometimes easy to find depending on the amount of data you have in paper.
But the digital data storage enables you to storage a large amount of date in
less paper space. You can use the data anytime you want, which is more
easily to manage, analyse and even make backup copies as it does not
require a lot of additional space. Saving information on a computer or cloud
storage is better than paper, for various reasons, such as:
- the amount of space needed in a computer is much less than the
space needed for paper storage; - in case of fire, the computer storage
has lower risk of losing.
- allows a faster search; - allow access for the information, it does not
matter where you are, which means saves time and removes the risk
of loss.
- It can also be more secure, as only the employees that contain the
correct login password can access them.
The way a data is stored will define how organized the company is and will
define how easy it is to control access, use and protect. If data is properly
collected, managed and disposed, it reduces the risk of theft, security
breaches and physical damage.
Data analytics companies make it possible to detect anomalies, like errors or
fraud. The network used to save this large amount of data must be good, to
ensure security to their data. To be able to access their data, the companies
must develop techniques and tools for filtering large data sets to data that is
currently needed. For example, Hadoop is an open source used for storing
and processing big data. Hadoop uses the MapReduce programming model
for faster storage and retrieval of data from its node.
The way the organisation stores their work, and how they work will depend
on how:
- large the team is
- specific routines are carried out in the workplace
- the team is split into smaller groups to carry a particular job either at
times of the day or night
- the team is spread out either a large area or different sites
It does not matter how people are organised or how they communicate with
each other, the way they communicate within their team must be crucial and
smooth to enable better run of the organisation. Independent of how large
the group is, the group must have a way of identification, most of the
companies use identification numbers. This helps in traceability of everything
