TASK 1: Nutrient Deficiencies Poster: describing two nutritional deficiency
diseases in terms of their signs and symptoms:
Crohn’s Disease: this is a type of a condition that is called inflammatory
bowel disease (IBD). In which when parts of the digestive system would
become inflamed. The IBD is a group of disorders (intestinal disorders) which
cause inflammation of the digestive tract. Crohn’s disease affects the entire
digestive tract, while other conditions only affect certain parts, such as
ulcerative colitis.
People who live with Crohn’s are affected from the mouth al all the way to
the anus. This disease leads to serious problems, symptoms include weight
loss, abdominal pain. Diarrhoea, and fatigue. The symptoms does come and go, when this happens it is
called (flare-up). Or the symptoms can be constant.
The causes of Crohn’s disease are not quite certainly known,
doctors and scientists suggest that some of these factors does cause
Crohn’s disease:
An Autoimmune reaction : is when the immune system does attack
healthy cells in the human body, when it is thought that bacteria in
the (digestive system) does trigger the immune system mistakenly,
when it must not. Because the response from the immune system
does cause inflammation which exposes the symptoms of Crohn’s
disease. Genes also play a role, as Crohn’s disease does run in
families.
The studies continues concerning the link between genetics and Crohn’s disease. However, the current
research suggests that if a or parent have Crohn’s disease, there is a possibility of their children to be a
carried of the disease and develop it. Other factors that are suggested by studies could increase the
chances od having Crohn’s disease, this include drugs, [ Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) ] for example ibuprofen. Very fat-diet have impact as well, and smoking does have a big
impact also on increasing the chance of developing Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease could develop at any age, but the symptoms does appear in early adulthood or
childhood. The lower part of the small intestine is mostly affected by Crohn’s disease, however it does
affect many parts of the intestine which cause thickening and swelling. Thus a thick tissue would block
the bowel completely, and then a surgery would be necessary. As there is no cure for Crohn’s disease
in the current time. however, treatments are available for enhancing the life of the patient and to have
better lifestyle.
As soon as the symptoms of Crohn’s disease are noticed, there must be action taking place and visiting
gastroenterologist for diagnosis is important to start managing the symptoms effectively as it will be a
life-term condition to deal with. Because if the symptoms are left unmanaged, this would result a
consequences of disagreeable symptoms and it gets worse over time. the early signs of Crohn’s disease,
when the body attacks the healthy cells that are in the intestinal lining, it will not be easy to identify
the disease if we do not recognise the signs and ignore them. This includes losing appetite, feeling
exhausted, nausea, fever, abdomen pain, pain in the eyes and even red bumps that appear on the skin.
These signs might not seem related or harmful, it is common to be ignored.

, Nevertheless, when the condition get worse, the symptoms get worse which include weight loss,
inflammation in liver, bleeding rectum, pain around the anus, constant diarrhea, and bloody stools.
These strong symptoms of this disease could lead to many complications. the blood vessels can shatter
as the cracks that are Crohn’s-related creep beneath the mucosal inner layer of the intestine. This
bleeding (blood-loss) in the digestive track lead to (iron-deficient anaemia). Therefore, the
inflammation of the liver that develops, it will prevent the body from sufficiently absorbing iron,
which leads also to iron-deficient anaemia. Consequently, Crohn’s disease with Anaemia would lead to
low (haemoglobin) that includes Vitamin B12 deficiency; that is caused by the poor absorption in the
intestines. Therefore, tiredness and fatigue, as well as breath shortness will be most common
symptoms of anaemia.
Treatments:
Dealing with Crohn’s disease is not easy, as it affects the body physically, mentally and even
psychologically. A regular diets must be followed, along with iron supplements for more iron to be
added to the diet. On the other hand, there are side effects as anaemia that is associated with Crohn’s
disease would affect the ability of the body to absorb iron. Taking the oral iron supplements would
worsen the symptoms that already exists due to Crohn’s disease, which include nausea.
Each individual experiences different cases and conditions with this disease, the doctor would suggest
the best diets for each individual. The best food that alter the iron supplements would be: fish, diary,
red meat, fruits, nuts, vegetables. There food are iron-rich, and would help better instead of
supplements. However, it is still based on each individual’s circumstances, as some people can not
consume certain food, and having a balance that suits the patient’s body with nutritional needs along
with the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease is chronic, and living with its symptoms is not easy, this is also because the current
existing treatments do not work on each individual, and research is still in place for new treatments
and maybe cures. Some patients do not get to have a normal life as other with Crohn’s disease, due to
daily activities they can not participate with anymore, which affects the menta health as well and not
only the physical health. That’s why it is extremely important to balance a healthy diet, and a healthy
life style to ease the symptoms, because neglecting any symptom would lead to worse conditions, and
even to heart conditions, kidney failure and also colon cancer. Taking the right action and treatment
would lower the risks of these conditions, and would prevent Crohn’s disease from getting further on
the body.
