Organ: Tonsils :
Its function is to fight the infections
→ it helps to protect form substances
such as pathogens to enter the body Organ: Thymus :
through the mouth or nose. This is found behind the
breastbone, it s function is to
produce the immune cells → T-
cells.

Organ: Bone Marrow : it is a
flexible tissue that produce blood
cells → it is vascular in which it
is supplied with great amount of
blood vessels Organ: Spleen : the function
None morrow contain stem cells of it is to filter the blood, and
→ which are a specialised cells also produce white blood cells
that develop in the white blood that help fight infections.
cells (carrying oxygen around the
body) which help to fight against
the infections.

Organ: Lymphatic vessel : This is a
network of capillaries, and tubes that are
located all throughout the body in which
Organ: Lymph node : this is where the they carry and transfer / transport the
substances that travel into the lymphatic lymph away from the tissues and get it
fluid gets filtered → this also contain the back to the circulation of the blood. They
(lymphocytes) in which to fight against do filter and collect lymph at the nodes,
diseases and infections. The immune cells and they do constantly move to bigger
that the lymph node contain it help to vessels that are called (collecting duct).
attack the germs and destroy it in the way
through the lymph fluid.

, The Lymphatic System
Task 1 :
- P3 : Describe the gross anatomy and function of the organs of the lymphatic system.

A table describing the lymphatic system organs and their function/structure.

The name of the organ The function and structure

The spleen The spleen is the organ that acts like a filter for the blood; as it removes the old and damaged red
blood cells. The blood will flow through many narrow passages when it enters the spleen, and
that when the spleen will act and perform a quality control. The spleen only has lymphatic vessels
in contract with the lymph nodes. Because it does filter the blood, instead of lymph fluid. The
‘splenic artery’ is the blood primary supply to the spleen, and that it does receive blood
continuously from the foregut organs of the abdominal cavity.
This organ is located near the left upper of the abdomen. And it has two types of distinct tissues:
- The red pulp this is where the blood gets filtered, and it is made of tissues that are
called ‘Billroth Cord’ which is connective tissue.
- The white pulp this is s secondary type of lymphoid tissue, which are packed with
antigen-presenting cells, and lymphocytes.
The function of the thymus glands is to produce white blood cells, that are called T lymphocytes
The thymus gland (T cells ). Which is a very important function in the immune system, due to helping to fight
infections. When the T cells are produced via the red bone marrow, they are immature. And this
is where they mature as the thymus is responsible for training the T-cells to attach pathogens,
viruses, bacteria and so.
It is located in the chest behind the breastbone, and in between the lungs. In where it is above and
in-front of the heart. It is a pink-Gray tissue, which is very soft. The organ gets contracted when
getting older, as it grows in size during childhood, but as hormones act upon the body, this organ
begins to contract. Therefore, when aging it gets smaller and shrinks rapidly and as a result it
blends with its surrounding tissue.

The tonsils This is part of the immune system in the body, the function of the tonsils is to prevent the germs
from entering the human body throughout the mouth or even the nose. In which they contain
many white blood cells. However, the tonsils does shrink when aging, but it is not a result for
each individual. But however, the tonsils can get very infected, and overwhelmed.
They are located just at the throat, in the pharynx, and are split into 4 pairs. In which they differ
in their structure:
- The palatine tonsils are in the sides of the oropharynx
- The lingual tonsils are just behind the tongue.
- The adenoids which are just in the nasopharynx wall.
- The tubal tonsils are near each eustachian tube entrance in the nasopharynx wall.
The lymphatic gland : The function of the lymph gland is to filtrate the substances which travel through the lymphatic
fluid, in which they do contain the while blood cells (lymphocytes) to help fight infections as well
as diseases. Many lymph gland are located just all throughout the body.
It is shaped like a bean, and it is small, which is split into two areas:
- The capsule this is small layer of connective tissue which it cover the outside of the
body.
- The cortex this is located beneath the capsule, in where it is composed of T and B
lymphocytes and also other important cells, including macrophages.
