“Human emotions are always logical and rational” Lucie Brightwell-Hammond

Human emotions are complicated and abstract. It can be difficult to attempt to understand the
full reasoning and maybe even different to what we’d imagine or expect. For example, we
may think that if something terrible happened to our enemy that we’d be overjoyed and even
wish it on them, but when it comes around we regret what we’d previously thought and are
upset.

For a human emotion to be logical, it would have to be

On the one hand, human emotions could be rational because sometimes we experience
similarities of emotions, many people may have similar reactions to things. For example, a lot
of people may share the same humour and therefore laugh at similar things, and many people
find the idea of someone dying sad. This could suggest that human emotion could be rational
as there are some things that can receive the same reaction from many people and therefore
there must be a reason so many people have the same reaction.

On the other hand, it could be argued that human emotions cannot be logical because we
cannot have true knowledge of them. Emotions cannot be measured in a logical way, we as
humans use different words on the same scale to try and measure them (e.g., sad; upset, sad,
depressed, mourning etc.), but there is no agreed upon scale for any emotion. Therefore,
emotions cannot be logical because they are not things that can be measured and therefore
cannot be true knowledge. Also, the reactions people have to things are based on opinion e.g.
a bird flying into a window; some people may find it funny and some people may find it sad.
Because emotions are based on opinions they cannot possibly be logical because different
people have different opinions and opinions cannot be knowledge.

In conclusion, some may argue that human emotion could have some rationality to it because
many people have similar reactions to the same things. However, I would argue that human
emotion isn’t rational or logical because it is based on opinion and not fact and therefore
could never be logical.
