Unit 6 D1 Influences on learning

D1
I believe that throughout this course my personal learning has developed, which has benefitted
service users that I have come into contact with during my placement. I believe that when I attended
my placement and conversed with the residents at Sherdley Court, because of my development
throughout the course I was able to provide sympathy and empathy appropriately. I also believe that
Unit 1 – Developing effective communication in health and social care, has helped me to
communicate much better with others, especially whilst at my placement. Unit 1 provided methods
to use when communicating with service users such as building relationships and defusing
aggression, which were two methods I applied during my placement. Whilst at Sherdley court I built
relationships between me and some of the residents in order to build trust, this makes the service
users feel as though they have a friend, someone who they can trust. Trust is important in order to
create respect.

I believe that the method I mentioned previously was an apt demonstration of how I applied theory
into practice. Other units were also extremely useful and beneficial to the service users during my
placement. Unit 2 – Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care, helped me to interact
with others who were different than me. For example, a lady at my placement had a disability which
preventing her from talking clearly, which was quite problematic during communication. Instead of
being slightly frightened by her, unit 2 taught me to respect all people and that we are all equal in
this world. This made me approach her more often, the more times I spoke with her the easier it
became to understand her.

Unit 3 - Health, safety and security in health and social care, was very beneficial to the safety of the
service users. Whilst learning this unit I became very familiar with The Health and Safety at Work Act
1994 and The Data Protection Act 1998. Having confidence in these acts and adhering to them
ensures the safety of the service users, for example, understanding the importance of The Data
Protection Act 1998, means that the service users and their private information is kept safe and
secure adding to their overall safety and security.

Staff:
I believe that I also benefitted the staff that welcomed me into my placement with knowledge I had
gained throughout the course. I believe that in my setting I was able to prove that I was trustworthy
and knew what I was doing as during my whole placement I did not require a mentor, they were
confident I would be able to navigate the building safely independently. I was also willing to help at
any chance I could, which included helping staff to set tables up, locate residents and hand out tea. I
believe this helped as the residential care nurses are extremely busy and any offered help would be
useful to them. I believe that the building relationships method that I utilized was beneficial to the
residential care nurses as once id created a foundation with some of the residents, we would chat
until I’d completed my hours for the day, which prevented them from following the nurses around
which I am aware some of the residents did. This will have made more time for the nurses to
complete tasks.

I think that having completed a placement/ volunteering it makes you much more desirable as an
individual. Employers are always searching for individuals who excel and are involved with other
activities keeping them active. I believe having a placement/ volunteering completed it also shows
the employer your dedication and need to benefit others positively. I believe that my employability
skills developed during and after my placement, making me much more effective with my
communication skills, active listening skills.
