Assignment 1 – Theory and applications of 3D

Introduction
3D Modelling is used widely by designers and artists all over the globe. 3D Models is normally just
mathematical calculations to represent 3D Geometric data. To create these types of models you will
need specialised 3D Software which can output and render these models as well as create them
using simple and advanced tools. This type of modelling technique can be helpful in the industry as
designers would not have to manually model stuff with the expense of materials. However over the
years 3D Modelling has advanced and now 3D Printers are available which can print the
computerised models in 3 Dimensions.

Applications of 3D
3D Modelling can be used for many things these normally include Models, product design,
animations, TV, film, web, games, education and architectural walk-through. Each of these I am
going to explain below:

Models
The main use for applications of 3D is modelling where you can create models using solid shapes and
can be connected in numerous ways such lines, curves, square edges etc. Most of these models can
be solid meaning there is volume inside the model to make is feel more realistic however for video
games it can be just Shell which means there is no volume on the inside allowing the computer to
save render time and space. There are various tools designers can use to help with the 3D Models
such as sculpting, curve modelling and polygon modelling. These models can be used in variety of
ways such as for educational use or entertainment use.

Product design
Product design is about modelling top quality models that can be helpful to visual how the end
product is going to look. The best thing about product design is the product can be tweaked in any
way to give a better result. Most businesses like car, technology or furniture companies would
create their products would be done in 3d modelling software with 3d artists with very high detail
and if the business is happy with the end product that can start producing it to sell. With product
design sometime even functionality can be added to the product to see how it is going to work.
However this can take up a far bit of cost because designers have to be highly skilled and the bigger
the model is the more time it will take to produce. Furthermore these models can then be printed in
3D so there is a small preview of the product, you can see some examples below of 3D models which
are used in product design are not textured but look very realistic.
