Anatomy
Muscles of Mastication
● Temporalis → elevation & retraction
● Masseter → elevation
● Medial pterygoid → elevation & lateral movement
● Lateral pterygoid → protrusion & lateral movement

Other Facial Muscles
● Mentalis
● Buccinator
● Orbicularis oris
● Genioglossus
● Depressor/levator anguli oris
● Mylohyoid

Maxilla (mx)
● DBA = residual alveolar ridge (primary, least displaceable, best able to carry stress of
mastication), palatal rugae (secondary), median palatine raphe, incisive papilla, mx
tuberosities. 24cm^2 avail (more resistant)
● Pressure on incisive papilla → interferes w/ B&N supply → burning (prov relief)
● Buccal frenum: overlies levator anguli oris. Can move AP due to orbicularis oris &
buccinator
● Posterior buccal vestibule: masseter determines thickness. Coronoid process
enroaches on this space during lat excursions. Lab/buccal flanges must
contact movable tissues → seal
● Fovea palatini: 2 small pits, mucus gland openings, just post to/at VL
● Vibrating line: imaginary, connects pterygomx notches
● Posterior palatal seal AKA post-dam: border seal, prev food impaction, increases
retention
- anterior border = jn of hard/soft palate
- posterior border = VL

Mandible (md)
● DBA = residual alveolar ridge, buccal shelf, RM pad, pterygomd raphe, mylohyoid ridge.
14cm^2 avail (less resistant)

, ● Buccal frenum: overlies depressor anguli oris. Movable by orbicularis
oris/buccinator → wide notch
● Lingual frenum: overlies genioglossus
● Buccal vestibule: denture periphery must end in ST. Stability comes from bony
foundations where tissues firmly attached to bone
● Buccal shelf: lat bound by EOR, med bound by crest of ridge. Buccinator
attachment. Flange rests on buccinator. Masseter may crowd buccinator fwd
→ indent @ DB
● RM pad: contains RM gland, pterygomd raphe, buccinator, temporal tendon.
Bone-resorption resistant! Coverage → some border seal
● Pterygomd raphe: extends from pterygoid hamulus (sup) to alveolar ridge (inf)
● Mylohyoid ridge: mylohyoid attachment (FOM)
