- Gorbachev was treated with suspicion
- Leading members of the communist party believed that perestroika and glasnost had
weakened communism
- A coup was organised to remove Gorbachev from power - which initially was
successful (Gorbachev who was away from the capital, was prohibited from
returning)
- The new government overturned the freedoms gained during perestroika and
glasnost - their goal to restore the power of the Soviet Union
- The new government lasted for 3 days
- Boris Yeltsin, the future Russian president described the new government as ‘illegal’
and encouraged citizens
