Government
 Government in Elizabeth England was centred around the monarch (king or queen).
 Monarchs believed that they ruled by 'divine right', which meant they thought God had chosen
them.
 Because of this, Elizabeth made all of the important decisions.
 Elizabeth could also declare war, call parliament and reject its laws, and make legal judgements.
 She could also grant titles/lands/money/jobs as a way of getting support (this was called
patronage).
 Elizabeth was assisted by her Secretary of State, who advised her and carried out her
instructions.

Court People who lived with or near the monarch. They
entertained and advised the monarch.
Privy Council The monarch’s leading advisors who and advised
the monarch and carried out the monarch's
decisions.
Parliament Passed laws, approved taxes and advised the
monarch. Some members were elected.
Lords Lieutenant Part of local government. Often in the Privy
Council, that oversaw defence and enforced
