Adult nursing: being my chosen branch, has been a growing interest of mine ever since I began my
placement for my health and social care course in 2019. My main placement was with a domiciliary
care company called “lima homecare’ I took pride in my role as a carer and always practised my best
duty of care. I worked alongside the district nurses and seeing what impact they made on some
people’s lives made me more and more absorbed with the idea of it.

I was employed with lima homecare for just over a year and a half, this is when I knew it would be a
good idea and great experience for me to work in a care setting instead of people’s homes. I knew
this would prepare me for what I knew I wanted to achieve. This year on June the 4 th I was employed
at ‘Elstow Manor’ run by Hamberely care. A luxury care home and no doubt an amazing work
environment too. Whilst working full time, on 12-hour shifts, four times a week I had a lot of time to
observe the nurse’s tasks and find out more information about the role from the nurses themselves.

I know with all jobs comes challenges. I have seen challenges in action from the day I step foot in the
health and social care society. Anything from challenging behaviour, different ways of working and
short staff to concerned or grieving families. Even when I faced new challenges and was put outside
my comfort zone, I remained calm, collected and professional. I know now that it is my role to be
that positive person for the residents/clients because you don’t know how anyone truly feels and
being that person, someone can truly trust and confide in for me, is everything and more. It gives me
a sense of purpose and brings me happiness to see even a smile from one of the residents. I want to
be able to do this as much as I possibly can.

Although I love my role as a carer, I want to further my career and I found I took a keen interest,
particularly in the medical side of things. For instance, when the nurse would arrive to change the
dressing, I wanted to know how this was done and how we now use today’s medical knowledge.
