Battle Of Tannenberg
The Battle of Tannenberg was one of WW1's first battles. Fought on the Eastern front between Russia
and Germany in modern-day Poland. The battle took place from the 26th to the 30th of August 1914, 1
month after WW1 started.


Before the Battle started, Rennenkampf's First Army was moving to the west. This was before Germany
was prepared and didn’t predict Russia would be there so early because Russia had extensive rugged
terrain, industrial resources shortages and a lack of infrastructure. However, on July 25th 1914 (3 Days
before the War) Russia was on the advance. Russia’s First Army (commander Rennenkampf) targeted
Konigsburg as then could later advance to Berlin, while the Second Army (commander Samsonov) circled
the German Eighth Army (commander Paul Van Hinnberg). However, the First Army had to retreat to
gather more resources, so Paul Von Hindenberg decided to split his 200,000-soldier Army (compared to
the 500,000 total Russian Army) to send a large portion of his army to attack the second Army and the
remaining to battle the first army.


The Battle of the Second Army didn’t go well. On August 27th, Samsonov thought he had the upper
hand. However, Germany attacked Samsonov’s left flank in a surprise attack, sending half the Second
Army retreating. On August 29th, again Samsonov was caught off guard as the German Army
Surrounded them, sending the rest of the Second Army into surrender. Because the First Army wasn’t
more than 110 km from the First Army, the Germans caught up and defeated the First Army.
