The importance of participationResearch and studies are ‘the detailed study of a subject, in order to discover new information or to
reach a new understanding.’ The conduction of research is crucial towards developing knowledge of
understanding human behavior which highlights the importance of studies as a general format. The
fundamental aspect of conducting research studies is having an efficient amount, in addition to the
correct type, of participants to be able to provide the research with a holistic set of results as well as
being able to meet the research goals and hypothesis (Otondo, 2020). Within this essay we shall be
analyzing and dissecting the importance and value that participants hold towards the establishment,

When discussing participation's importance towards research it can very obviously be stated that
without the participation of individuals there can be no study or experiment for researchers to conduct
in which they can deduct results from. However, Elizabeth and Kath, (2016) have provided an additional
statement of underlining the importance of a researcher-participant relationship within research as they
state that when conducting quantitative research there may be a need for the researcher to distance
themselves from the participants to decrease the level of potential bias that may tamper the results.
Therefore, this statement can also be applied in the vice versa scenario of a qualitative research (such as
interviews) may be having to require a degree of participant and researcher relationship to establish a
degree of trust so that participants feel more comfortable to share more on their opinions which has the
potential of providing the research with a greater depth of detail. Therefore, this shows that participants
are crucial towards the fundamentals of research results containing the depth of detail they require for
researcher's developing our comprehension and perspectives on the research criteria alongside also
acknowledging the fact that
In addition to general participation developing the depth of comprehension on human functioning,
participation of individuals with certain characteristics also plays a major role in developing our
understanding which holds the potential to benefitting wider society. This type of participation has
shown to have this degree of benefit within research on medicinal drugs, specifically with research upon
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s). Evidence to this form of benefits from participants
obtaining certain characteristics can be shown within the pilot study of SSRIs upon the sexual
functioning within chronically depressed patients. Piazza et al, (1997) had discovered that by using SSRIs
on patients who were suffering with their sexual functioning, as a side effect of chronic depression, had
experienced either a positive effect or a negative effect on their sexual functioning regarding on the
patients' gender. Piazza had found that ’overall sexual functioning significantly improved in women’
while on the contrary ‘overall sexual functioning significantly worsened in men’ regarding desire and
psychological arousal. This displays that due to being able to conduct a study by having access to
participants with the distinct characteristic of experiencing sexual dysfunction as a side effect to chronic
depression allowed for the discovery of the antagonistic effects of SSRIs on the sexual functioning of
both genders which provided depressed patients with acknowledgement of antidepressants once they
are ingested.
