1. A description of your complex real-world problem, and an explanation about why you chose
this problem.

Ocean overfishing is a difficult real-world issue that I choose to study. Too many fish are being
taken out of the water, causing a food chain imbalance and ultimately in the loss of other
important marine animals such as sea turtles and corals. I chose this topic because I had recently
finished seeing the film Moana, which includes a brief discussion on overfishing.

2. A minimum of two sub-problems that are more manageable and solvable.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a sub-problem of transnational organized
crime and human trafficking. These violations jeopardize international maritime security and
have a reputation for being difficult to prosecute. The reduction of the fish population is another
worry. Freshwater fish populations are declining. Almost one-third of all freshwater fish species
are threatened with extinction. In the year 2020, 16 freshwater fish species were declared extinct.

3. An explanation of how these sub-problems came about and are related to or a direct result of
the overall problem.

Illegal fishing, which usually refers to fishing without a license, fishing in a restricted area,
fishing with prohibited gear, fishing beyond a quota, or fishing for prohibited species, is a key
component of IUU fishing. The majority of the world's fish is caught in the national seas of
coastal states. Several fish species have become extinct as a result of overfishing, pollution,
habitat loss, and climate change.

4. A description of how solutions to these problems connect with each other in solving the
overall problem.

To eradicate illegal fishing operations and address the problem of overfishing, we must raise
awareness about fisheries crime and its consequences. Create national environmental security
task forces to facilitate cross-border cooperation on fisheries crime and assess the needs of
countries that are most vulnerable to illegal fishing. We can also carry out operations to stop
illicit fishing at sea and in ports, disrupt trafficking networks, and ensure that national laws and
policies are obeyed, as well as increase surveillance to better police fishery infractions. Finally,
better data on fisheries crime may be collected to help with monitoring and enforcement. To
reduce pollution, we must reduce the number of car trips we take and the use of fireplaces and
wood stoves. Additionally, avoid burning leaves, debris, or other materials, as well as using gas-
powered lawn and garden equipment. Bottom trawling, dynamiting, and poisoning are all
destructive fishing techniques that harm environments both near and far from shore. Tourism
brings millions of boaters, snorkelers, and scuba divers into close contact with fragile wetland
and reef ecosystems. To avoid habitat devastation, we must eradicate these behaviors.
