Unit 1 – Anatomy
Assignment 1 – Skeletal system
, Axial and Appendicular skeleton
The skeletal system is made up of two different skeletons, known as the axial skeleton, and the
appendicular skeleton. They make up different areas of the human skeleton, and have different
functions.
Axial skeleton
The axial skeleton makes up the central, core of the human body, housing and protecting the
vital organs. It includes; the cranium, vertebral column, sternum and ribs.
Appendicular skeleton
The appendicular skeleton is made up of unfused bones, which allow movement. It is made up of
generally longer bones to allow greater movement of the limbs. The appendicular skeleton also
provides some protection for the body. It includes; the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, as well as
the upper and lower limbs.
