B+B, further creating jobs and opening new services

- Allowed native farmers to get training about conservation, allowing them to apply
EU diversification grants
Negative Impacts
1. Economic problems
As people leave, main employment is farming, which brings in relatively little
income, while people moving in are old and wealthy - inequality
- The 2001 census revealed that 20% of the population falls into the top two socio-
economic categories, while farming is the main employment which only has a mean
income of £23,000 a year
2. Service shortage
People moving out sees services close and little demand for new ones
- St Bartholomew's school is open to primary school children, however secondary
school kids are bussed a 10-mile journey to Leek
, - The nearest hospital is in Buxton, which is 6 miles away
3. Became reliant on external funding
- In 1990s the financial aid schemes ended, seeing the internet cafe and pub close by
2015, with the chip shop only open a few days a week

to make almost six times more in the USA than he would in Mexico
- Mexican workers in the US average $1,870 per month, the average wage in Mexico is
$290 per month
2. Poor healthcare
- Mexico has 1800 people per doctor, compared to the US which has only 400 people
per doctor
3. High crime
- Mexico had a homicide rate of 24.8 per 100,000, compared to 1.2 per 100,000 in the
UK.
- 48,000 people having been killed in the past five years due to drug related crimes
4. Education
- 86% of the Mexican population literate versus 99% of the population in America
- 2014, according to the Internal organisation for migration, an estimated 14,000 of
the 19,000 Mexicans with doctorates live in the USA
Positive Impacts (USA)
1. Take less desired jobs
- Over 50% of Mexican men in USA are janitors, lorry drivers etc
