Basics of Biology [Intro ]

The course will be organized into 12 modules:

1. Classification of living organisms and their relationships
2. Different types of cells
3. Diversification of engineering stream into different fields

The course will evaluate your performance through:

• Multiple choice questions
• One word answers
• Problem solving exercises

At the end of the course, there will be an exam which will cover the topics
discussed in the assignments, and help enhance your knowledge level.

Sec 1: Introduction to Living Organisms

The coronavirus is a disease-causing virus, similar to other known viruses, that
spreads through coughing and other modes of transmission from person to
person. However, certain properties of this virus can cause pathology within
humans and potentially lead to death.
Science refers to a systematic arrangement of knowledge, ranging from
specialties such as cutting-edge open-heart surgeries to broader fields like
social and natural sciences. These main branches are further subdivided into
specific fields and sub-branches for in-depth study.
The social sciences encompass sub-branches including:

• Sociology
• Psychology
• Anthropology

These are just a few examples of the social sciences sub-branches, as there are
many more areas of study within this field.

, History plays a crucial role in the social development of human beings.
Linguistics is a scientific field that studies human language, while political
science deals with the theory and practice of politics and political behavior.
Psychology focuses on human behavior in the context of mental processes,
while public administration studies the management of the human workforce.
The life sciences aim to study planet Earth, including geology and botany.
Many of these branches of life science are interdisciplinary and work together
to gain a better understanding of living organisms. Biology, in particular, is a
field of science dedicated to studying living organisms.
One of the earliest attempts at classifying living organisms was made by
Aristotle, a biologist and philosopher from ancient Greece. Another significant
figure was Galen, a Greek physician who conducted the first dissection of an
animal and identified its different organs. Finally, Charles Darwin is a well-
known figure in biology, having made significant contributions to the theory
of evolution.
When it comes to generating energy, it's important to consider the disposal-
based materials being used. In living systems, the energy produced is utilized
for anabolic reactions. This is different from a diesel engine which exhausts
energy in the form of smoke.
Living organisms should be able to reproduce identical copies of themselves,
as well as produce energy through self-sufficient machinery. This intrinsic
ability is what sets them apart from nonliving systems. Plants are a great
example of a living organism that possesses these properties.
As we continue to redefine our criteria and parameters for living organisms,
it's clear that self-replication and energy production are essential qualities.
The responsiveness is a crucial criterion for all living organisms. They must be
able to respond to adverse environmental conditions such as temperature,
wind, and starvation. Even robots can work efficiently in extremely hot
conditions without any issues.
A diverse and complex biological system is vital for every living organism. For
de, humans have begun adapting to new food habits and their ability to learn
has culminated in their striking differences from monkeys.
This course will focus on studying those aspects that define living organisms.
The planet Earth has about 8.7 million organisms distributed across the water,
animals, chromistas, fungi, and plantae, all of which fall under eukaryotes.
