Paper A1 (BIOL201) (3 hours)
___________________________________________________________

Answer ALL parts of Section A in one answer booklet. Answer ONE question from
Section B and ONE question from Section C in 2 separate answer booklets. All parts
of Section A are equally weighted. Sections A, B and C also carry equal weighting.

Section A - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer all five questions)
1. Using diagrams, illustrate the process of electron transport through complex III of the
respiratory chain.

2. How do hormones control the activity of glycogen synthase and glycogen
phosphorylase?

3. Summarise, in bullet point or diagrammatic format, the role played, in the
conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA, by the various E-subunits of the pyruvate
dehydrogenase complex (PDC) along with its co-factors and co-enzymes. Structures
of compounds are NOT required.

4. (i) What sort of useful information can be learnt from applying pre-steady state
kinetics to the study of enzyme activity?

(ii) Outline how you would go about carrying out a pre-steady state kinetics
experiment.

5. How is fatty acid biosynthesis regulated by acetyl-CoA carboxylase?

Section B - BIOL201 Biochemistry (answer one question only)
6. Using appropriate figures, describe the structure of ATP synthase and explain how
proton flow through the enzyme results in the production and release of ATP.

7. Considering both liver AND skeletal muscle, briefly describe the metabolic pathways
involving glucose which predominate in these tissues during periods of physical
exercise. How is the activity of these pathways controlled by the energy status of the
cell and the level of circulating glucose in the bloodstream?

8. Describe, using named examples, the complete oxidation of saturated and
unsaturated fatty acids to CO2 and H2O.
