1. Describe the synthesis of saturated fatty acids.
2. ATP synthesis is dependent on the rotation of the catalytic (β) subunits of the
enzyme, F0-F1 ATP synthase.
(a) Describe two recent experiments that directly demonstrated the rotation of the
catalytic subunits of the ATP synthase during ATP synthesis. (40%)
(b) Making reference to the structure of the F0 portion of the ATP synthase, show
how proton translocation through it drives the rotation of the catalytic
subunits. (60%)
3. Describe the reactions involved in the citric acid cycle and discuss its regulation.

4. Discuss the factors that limit the extent of blood clotting in humans under normal
physiological circumstances.
5. Discuss the ways in which an enzyme can reduce the free energy of activation of
the reaction it catalyses.
6. Considering both liver AND skeletal muscle, briefly describe the metabolic
pathways involving glucose which predominate in these tissues during periods of
physical exercise. How is the activity of these pathways controlled by the energy
status of the cell and the level of glucose circulating in the bloodstream?
