,Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

‘Chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) is a type of
progressive lung disease that is
preventable and treatable. COPD
is characterized by long-term
respiratory symptoms and airflow
limitation.’ (Wikepedia,2021)

Overview

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has a group of lung conditions that
cause breathing problems. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the name
given for that group of lung conditions which are long-term lung diseases that
make it hard to breathe. If you have COPD, you can also be at an increased risk
of pneumococcal pneumonia which is a potentially serious bacterial lung
disease that you can catch anytime and anywhere.

The group includes:
- Emphysema- damage to the air sacs in the lungs
- Chronic bronchitis- long term inflammation of the airways

Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes.
These tubes carry air to and from the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs. Chronic
bronchitis is characterised by mucus production and a daily cough

Emphysema is a condition where the alveoli at the end of the smallest air
passages (bronchioles) of the lungs are then destroyed due an exposure to
smoke and other irritating gases that cause a damaging effect on the lungs.

, Commonly, COPD mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke.
Many people may also realise they do not have this condition. With this
condition, the breathing problems gradually tend to
worsen over time. Although treatments can help
control the condition, the condition can limit your
normal everyday activities. Chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease cannot be cured or reversed but
more many patients with COPD treatment is
available in which the treatment can help keep the
condition under control, so it doesn’t severely limit
how you live your everyday life.

In some cases, COPD may continue to worsen even
after treatment which can eventually have a major impact on someone quality
of life and may even lead to life threatening problems. According to the
National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) it is estimated that 3
million people have COPD, of whom 2 million are undiagnosed. (2016)
In your lungs, the airways become inflamed and thicken, the tissue where
oxygen is exchanged is then destroyed and the flow of air in and out of the
lungs decrease. Which means your body finds It harder to get rid of the waste
gas carbon dioxide as less oxygen gets into your body tissues.

Signs and symptoms

COPD increasingly makes breathing more difficult, but this condition can
develop slowly over many years and sometimes people may not even be aware
they have the condition. Most people diagnosed with COPD don’t have
noticeable symptoms until they reach their late 40s or 50s

Early symptoms

At the start of the condition, symptoms may be mild and may be mistaken for
a cold.

Early symptoms include:

- Occasional shortness of breath especially after exercise. You may also
wake up at night feeling breathless
