Trends in marriage:

- There were 219,850 marriages in total in England and Wales in 2019, a
decrease of 6.4% from 2018.
- In 2019, there were 213,122 marriages between opposite-sex couples, a
decrease of 6.5% from 2018 and 6,728 marriages between same-sex couples,
a decrease of 2.8% from 2018
- There were 179,905 marriages (81.8%) registered as civil ceremonies in
2019 and less than one in five (18.2%) were religious ceremonies.
- Over the last two decades, there has been a 60.4% decrease in opposite-sex
religious ceremonies.

Census 2021:

• First time same sex marriage was recorded
• 21.7 million people married or in a civil partnership (44% of population 16+)
• 99.4% of marriages were opposite sex
• Civil partnerships – 67,000 same sex, 35,000 opposite sex
• Increase in % of people never married or in a civil partnership from 34.6% to
37.9%
• Increase in divorced people from 9% to 9.1%
• Widowers declined to 6.1%, separated 2.2% of the population

2017. This proportion has steadily increased over the last 20 years from 69% in
