WHAT IS KNOWLEDGE – THE TRIPARTITE
VIEW

, Notes:

The view says that you have knowledge of a propositions:
PLATOS DEFINITION
1. If the proposition is true
2. You hold a belief that X is true
3. Your belief in X is justified
YOU MUST FULFILL THESE THREE CONDITIONS = TO KNOW SOMETHING

E.g I know the sky is blue, because it is true, I believe in this and I’ve gone outside and seen
it blue

You only have knowledge if and only if the above necessary & sufficient conditions are met

 Truth condition = ensures cognitive contact with reality, a reality which is based off
what is true
 Justification condition = necessary as people can often be right by luck e.g Gettier
cases
 This lucky guess is not praiseworthy and so we must form our beliefs on the basis of
reasons & evidence to avoid this

Necessary & sufficient conditions
- Each of the three conditions are necessary for knowledge
o Justified = it cannot be knowledge unless it is properly justified
 E.g Flipping a coin, friend says it’s going to land on heads, even when
it does, they say they didn’t know as it was a guess = not knowledge
o True: cannot know something gif it isn’t true
 E.g moon is made out of cheese
o Belief: if you do not believe it, you cannot say it is knowledge
- These necessary conditions are jointly said to be sufficient
