Lasted 6 minutes and it caused a 40 metre tsunami which ruined a nuclear
power station. The damage caused by the earthquake resulted in the
meltdown of seven reactors. Radiation levels at one point were over eight
times normal levels. People living near the reactor were evacuated
Over 800 aftershocks. A lot of damage and pollution up to 6 miles inland.
332,395 buildings damaged, 300 hospitals damaged, 2126 roads
damaged/destroyed. 4.4 million homes without power, transport disrupted.
US$235b to repair.
Rescue services arrived quickly, international aid donated over $1 billion and
gave out relief and sleeping kits, doctors flown over from other parts of Japan
to help, 300,000 left homeless so temporary shelters were built quickly,
rebuilding began immediately, bigger tsunami barriers, more education on
earthquakes and drills once a year for earthquakes + tsunamis, seismic
buildings, Japan predicted earthquake with lasers, early warning systems since
1952.
Japanese business affected (such as Honda and Toyota) it took 1 ½ years to get
back to normal, only 58% of people followed tsunami warnings, 49% that
didn’t follow them were hit by the wave.
