1.2 QUESTION 2: ESSAY WRITING

Title: Ethical Challenges within the Workplace
Ethical workplace behavior entails behavior that is consistent with the norms and values that are
acceptable both to individuals and society at large. These are virtues that should be upheld especially
within the confines of the workplace environment, in this case with the aid of the given scenario for
the above question. Given the scenario of the case involving the Gupta family which found itself in
the hands of KPMG it is important to realize that ethical behavior is of paramount importance to the
success of any organization. There are four key elements of ethical workplace behavior which
includes dedication that is commitment, integrity which entails the employee to demonstrate a high

, degree of honesty, the third one is accountability which is key especially within the Accounting
fraternity, fourthly is respect, within the accounting field it is important to show respect for each other
in order to create a conducive working environment.

Communicating ethics in the workplace especially the Accounting Field demands comprehensive
integrated communications. Snapcomm and Screensavers are perfect for reinforcing messages on
ethical behavior. According to Accounting Web, today’s diverse workforce requires a range of
tools for effective ethics communication. High impact channels inform and raise awareness, while
passive visual channels reinforce correct behaviour. Given the scenario of the Report on
Allegations of Irregularities and Misconduct which KPMG South Africa unearthed, tarnished the
image of the organization and had dire negative effects on the employees, this being as a result of
unethical workplace behaviour. Other examples of organizations that fell victim to unethical
behavior includes WorldCom and Enron, which resulted in individuals gaining vast sums of
money through application of unethical accounting practices, equally so many companies working
under pressure ended up applying poor accounting ethics to their decision making.

According to Glen, J. (2019) Why Are Accounting Ethics Important, explained that in modern day
world, the complexity and shear scale of corporate transactions has resulted in the need for a
transparent and fair assessment of obligations and values of the said transactions. In America, the
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has an ethics committee that sets standards that
are enforced and can see accountants suspended or stripped of their accounting designation for
unethical behavior.

Half, R (2017) Ethical issues in Accounting, How to Handle Common Dilemmas, looked at how
conflict of interest can result in unethical behavior which according to him can only be resolved
through implementing key four steps that includes identification of potential legal issues, taking an
outsider’s view , identifying the parties affected , and getting professional advice. Another
proponent Weed, G (2019) Why Are Ethics Important in Accounting? stressed the need for proper
ethics and ethical behavior as being extremely important in accounting. He further highlighted the
results from poor Ethics in Accounting which includes lag in business, legal repercussions which
are typical of the scenario of the KPMG report on the Gupta family business which resulted in
many legal repercussions and loss of business in the country.

Having said that, it is important for Accounting firms to adhere to proper ethical behavior and
follow the SAICA Ethics Charter as a guide to how they should operate and communicate within
the workplace environment, on order to avoid the case scenario of Gupta family and KPMG.
