I. Course Description
This course focuses on the care of adult patients with health alterations that require medical
intervention. Emphasis is placed on alterations in selected body functions. Concepts of patient
centered care, cultural sensitivity, informatics, safe practice, and professional attitudes are integrated
throughout the course. Clinical experiences provide the student the opportunity to apply theoretical
concepts and implement safe patient care to adults in a variety of settings.

The BRIGHTSPACE course management system will be utilized in this course. The syllabus and
other course materials will be placed on this site. This includes class announcements,
assignments, grades, materials, etc. BRIGHTSPACE can be accessed by going
tohttps://leesmcrae.brightspace.com/Brightspace/home. Please refer to BRIGHTSPACE on a
daily basis for any new information on the class. If the class is cancelled by the College for any
reason (e.g. inclement weather) faculty may post a lecture presentation or assignment on this site.

Lees McRae College may send correspondence to main-campus students through your assigned post
office box in the Cannon Student Center. All students are responsible for checking both their student e-
mail address and campus post office box regularly to receive official communication and other notices.
V. Course Objectives:
1. Perform a comprehensive health assessment on adult patients with medical and/or surgical
alterations and identify deviations from normal as well as related health risks.
2. Develop an individualized, evidence-based plan of care that demonstrates an appreciation of
a patient’s cultural, spiritual, and developmental variations and includes recommendations for
the adoption of health-promoting behaviors.
3. Participate as a member of the health care team and patient advocate while providing quality
care that promotes patient safety for adults with medical and/or surgical health alterations.
4. Demonstrate clinical judgment and participate in the evaluation of outcomes when providing
care to adult patients experiencing health alterations.
5. Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, and nutrition as well as evidence based
practice to the care of adult patients with medical and/or surgical health alterations.
6. Use verbal and nonverbal communication that promotes therapeutic relationships with adult
patients and their families, as well as professional relationships with members of the health
care team.
7. Use information technologies to access evidence based literature and patient information as
well as communicate with members of the health care team, accurately documenting patient
care in a secure and timely manner.

, VIII. Attendance Policy and Administrative Withdrawals
A student is considered “tardy” when the student arrives after the scheduled start of the class or leaves
prior to the scheduled end of the class. Two tardy events will equal an absence from class. Students
are permitted two (2) excused absences from a 16-week class, and one (1) excused absence from an
8-week class. Excused absences are permitted for any of the following: Personal or illness of an
immediate family member (spouse, child, parent, or grandparent), death of an immediate family member
(spouse, child, parent, grandparent, or sibling), school-sponsored events, court appointments, or jury
duty. Any non-emergent or planned absence or tardy should be communicated with the instructor at least
24 hours in advance via email. Any emergent or unplanned absence or tardy should be communicated
with the instructor as soon as possible via email. Any other type of absence from class will be
considered an unexcused absence. If the student is requesting an excused tardy, a document justifying
the tardy must be provided to the faculty member; otherwise, the tardy will be considered towards an
unexcused absence.
Students with an excused absence are responsible obtaining information of all content discussed in the
missed class. A student, who goes over the two excused absences for a class, must provide the faculty
member with documentation justifying the absence (doctor’s note, court note). No unexcused absences
are permitted in the May School of Nursing. If there is an unexcused absence, the student must meet
with the course faculty.
If a student fails to attend or stops attending class for four consecutive class meetings without justifying
documentation, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from all classes. In addition, the College
reserves the right to require at any time the withdrawal of a student whose social conduct or academic
progress is considered unsatisfactory as outlined in the Lees-McRae Student Handbook or Code of
Conduct. Grades will be determined according to withdrawal guidelines.
