Little Britain: Homework VEB 14/3/21

France:
The French see us as an industrial and innovative society, one of which they sometimes feel
threatened by due to their inability to compete with our transportation and forever
increasing technological medicinal advances. However, likewise we are also intimidated by
the French due to the fact that they are always ahead in the industries of fashion, food and
entertainment. Due to Britain’s lack of openness to topics such as sex and finance we often
fall behind in the industries that are driven by expression compared to France. This and our
past history with France have created stereotypes and tensions between our people over
the years which are still very present today.

Russia:
Whilst Russia and Great Britain don’t typically see eye to eye in terms of politics and our
social expectations, there is a sense of respect between the two nations’ cultures. For
example, the Russian education focuses on Britain’s literature, landmarks and culture to
teach English as a second language within schools, because of this many young Russian
children have a wide knowledge of Britain and many see it as a destination of travel. In
England however, due to Russians’ emotional social skills we tend to feel somewhat
intimated by their outspoken and explosive way of socialising and thus hold back from
getting too friendly due to our own social expectations.

Germany:
Due to our history with Germany during World War one and two, it is assumed that we
would have a bad relationship with them, however, in recent years this has improved, and
some may argue that our relationship with Germany has never been better, despite our
political statements that may suggest otherwise. The Germans have an admired but also
falsely created view of our country due to excessive media portrayals of old Britain and the
fictional Britain that can be seen in old classics such as Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice
etc… because of this many young people within Germany take an interest in our country but
are greatly disappointed when they come and visit it in person. The Germans also learn
British-English within schools and much of the big cities such as Berlin and Munich have
strong British influences in language, culture and architecture.

America:
Americans in the past viewed British people as intelligent, polite and charming due to the
accentuated accent and our culture of gentleman-ship that was introduced in the media
between the 50’s and 70’s. However, in recent times many young American’s find us as
sarcastic, rude and mannerless due to our clashing views, social expectations and humour.
This is also a result of the media portraying Britain in a negative way through shows such as
little Britain which presents British people as rude and somewhat hostile. Many Americans
also know little about British culture with the majority only knowing about very famous
areas of London such as Buckingham Palace and the Thames or pieces of knowledge they
have learnt via the media.
