Explain the practice and the meaning of going for refuge for
different Buddhists. (15) A01.

Within Buddhism Buddhists will take refuge in the three jewels
which are the Buddha, the Dharma and the sangha. A Buddhist
will repeat or chant in pali “Buddham saranam gacchami,
Dhammam saranam gacchami, Sangham saranam gacchami.”
These chants mean that they are taking refuge which are
declarations of adherence of the Buddhist way of life. For many
Buddhists taking refuge is not a physical place but more of a
state of safety and calmness in other words a centre of
excellence in spiritual terms, however the practice and the
overall meaning of taking refuge may be different for different
types of Buddhists, such as Theravada Buddhists, zen
Buddhists and Mahayana Buddhists.

All Buddhists believe the Buddha to be the enlightened one for
who they can learn from for Theravada Buddhists especially
they turn to his teachings for guidance for who they take refuge
in. Theravada Buddhists put emphasis on attaining self-
liberation through one’s own efforts for which they will
concentrate on mediation to gain enlightenment as well as
dedicating oneself to full time monastic life. Theravada
Buddhists generally have a rational view of the Buddha
meaning that they believe he was a human but is revered for
his wisdom and for the role model he provided to Buddhists.
Theravada Buddhist will take the buddhas command ‘work out
your own salivation with diligence’ literally for which It means
to take refuge in the Dhamma and test it for themselves, as
Theravada Buddhists believe in self liberation. However, on the
contrary for Mahayana Buddhists the buddha is less of a
historical figure but more of a supernatural figure in Buddhism
which can be explained by the quote “Is not an ordinary human
being walking in a sensuous world.” Through the three bodies
ideal they believe him to be not just human but semi spiritual
through high states of mediation and will take refuge in this
Buddha. Following on for Zen Buddhists the Buddha is our own
“Buddha nature” that is believed to be within oneself who is
ultimately apart of Buddha universe for which our current
universe is apart of. However, this will only be revealed to zen
