“Good morning, it's 6:00 o'clock on the 7th of January, this is Today with Martha Carney and Nick
Robinson. The headlines this morning. The US Congress has defied a violent attempt of US President
Trump supporters to try to overturn November's election result. Clashes inside the Capitol building
have left one woman dead. We hear from protesters, Republicans and correspondents on the scene,
and as Democrats described the incident as domestic terrorism, we will speak to the former director
of the CIA.”
“I never would have imagined this happened on American soil, and I certainly never ever would have
thought that it would be a President of the United States who encouraged and incited this”
Martha Carney speaking, “So can President Trump remain in office? One former White House
advisor tells us that he's dangerous in his current position. I don't know what Donald Trump will do
tomorrow, or what he will do the next day. It would not surprise me if he engaged in international
warfare again, or tip us into a complight and left President Biden holding the bag.”
Nick Robinson speaking.
“United States Congress has reconvened to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the Presidential Election.
After hundreds of Donald Trump supporters had earlier stormed the Capitol building, encouraged by
his unproVven claims of electoral fraud. A female protester who was shot during the clashes later
died. The ice President Mike Pence, who is chairing proceedings in the Senate, condemned the
violence. Mike Pence said” To those who wreak havoc in our capital today, you did not win. Violence
never wins. Freedom wins, and this is still the people’s house. As we reconvened in this Chamber,
the world will again witness the resilience and strength of our democracy."
Nick Robinson speaking
“Protesters broke into both debating chambers in the office of the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. One
occupied the Senate leaders chair and yelled, “Trump won that election”. With their guns drawn,
police moved the politicians to safety as they tried to clear the building. More than 50 people were
arrested. The Democrat leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, laid the blame squarely at the feet of
Donald Trump.”
Voice of Chuck Schumer.
“The President who promoted conspiracy theories that motivated these thugs, the President who
exhorted them to come to our nation's capital, egged them on. He hardly ever discourages violence,
and more often encourages it. This President bears a great deal of the blame.”
Voice of radio presenter Nick Robinson.
“Joe Biden said the storming of Congress bordered on sedition. While President Trump issued a
video message urging his supporters to go home but continuing to suggest that the election had
been stolen from him. The former President Barack Obama accused him of inciting the violence.
Here's our North America editor, Jon Supol.”
“As with December 7th 1941, when the Japanese army bombed the US Navy at Pearl Harbour, so the
6th of January 2021 will go down as a day of infamy for America. The day when a mob of Trump
supporters fired up by a President who told them to march in Congress, stormed the Capitol
building, fought with police, smashed windows and halted the certification of Joe Biden as the next
President. Donald Trump refused to condemn their actions, saying that he loved them, and they
