Unit 17: Caring for individuals with Dementia.

Dementia Care- An individual approach.

A.P1: Explain the causes of three serval types of dementia? + A. P2 Explain. the Symptoms of three
types of dementia?

Alzheimer Disease is the most common type of dementia, with statistics showing that by 2050 there is an
estimate of individuals having Alzheimer's is 12.7 million. It is also shown that when COVID-19 began to
2020, there was a 17 percent increase in individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease. (Association, 2022) The
exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not yet known. However, there are factors which increase your
chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease such as increasing age, a family history of Alzheimer’s
disease, untreated depression, lifestyle factors and conditions associated with cardiovascular diseases.
Normally, the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease are minor memory issues.

In Alzheimer disease, the connections between these cells are lost. This is because the proteins in the
brain build up and form abnormal structures, like plaques and tangles. This is because eventually these
nerve cells die, and brain tissue is lost. Alzheimer is caused by neurodegeneration within the brain.
Alzheimer Disease is a progressive disease with currently no cure now. However, there are treatments to
prevent the disease from progressing such as medications that can help boost the level of chemical
messengers, this can help relieve the symptoms of the disease.

For example, if you are working in a care home you may notice those signs in the residents if they forget
where they put their coats. Often. But if you are not in a specialist setting it can get dismissed as the
aging process, you would not realize till the disease was in the middle stages. As the disease progressed
you would notice more signs such as memory issues becoming more severe. You would also notice
confusion, disorientation. An example of this in a health and social care setting would be finding them
wandering around the garden, not realizing that it is their own garden. They may develop problems with
their language and their speech. They may have personality changes; examples could be having more
aggressive; they may be demanding and not trust others as much as they used to. May require
assistance with tasks such as cooking and dressing themselves. (NHS, 2021)

Alzheimer’s disease is mostly present in individuals who are over the age of 65. The risk of Alzheimer’s
disease and other types of dementia increases with age. Around one in 14 people are affected by
Alzheimer’s disease who are age 65+. More common in women than men. Women are more affected
because there is research backing up that women have a higher chance of developing Alzheimer’s due
to the hormonal factors. (ALZinfor.org, 2020)

Symptoms of Alzheimer disease include significant memory loss including the ability to forget short or
long-term events including recent or old events. Withdrawn from usual interests and activities, an
example of this may be that they used to love drawing and are not interested in that activity anymore.
They may also display mood swings towards individuals. An example of this is behaving in a way they did
not used to behave. (NHS,2021)
