Motivation

💡 The force that initiates, directs and sustains behaviour.

Martin & Fellenz (2010)

People's performance is influenced by what motivates them and their ability.

Concept of Motivation
1. Starts with an expectation or a need.

2. This expectation or need results in a driving force.

3. The driving force then makes us achieve our desired goal.

4. Achieving our desired goal provides us with fulfilment.

5. After the fulfilment we are presented with feedback.

6. The cycle then starts again as we have a new expectation or need.

Extrinsic v Intrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic = Tangible/financial related rewards e.g. bonuses and salary.

Intrinsic = Psychological/non-financial related rewards e.g. recognition, responsibility
and achievement.

The 5 Approaches of Motivation
1) Meeting basic human needs
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Based on individual human needs of motivation. Each level below needs to be
completed before moving up the hierarchy of needs, for instance esteem needs
cannot be achieved without belongingness and love needs being met.
