Introduction to Professionalism & Practice.
Title: Consultation Skills

AIMS
→ The aim of this lecture is to introduce you to key
consultation skills needed to ensure you are confident in
communicating clearly and effectively with patients and
delivering high-quality patient-centred consultations.

→ Be able to put these into practice (workshop sessions /
everyday practice).

LEARNING OUTCOMES
→ Describe the key skills, models and techniques that support
a patient-centred approach to your consultation practice.

→ Describe the components of history taking.

→ Identify tools that help explore patient’s knowledge,
understanding and concerns during a consultation.

WHAT IS A CONSULTATION?
A meeting to discuss something or give advice, with the goal of
discovering the best course of action to take.

NEED TO DEVELOP A
PERSON CENTRED APPROACH
→ One way conversation “telling”.
→ Focus is on reaching a diagnosis, not patient individual
needs and is product centred not patient centred.

A patient / person centred approach involves:
→ Partnership - eliciting the patient perspective & ‘listening’.
→ ‘Really Listening’

This is what we should be aiming for in all our consultations.

‘NO DECISION ABOUT ME, WITHOUT ME’
EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE: LIBERATING THE NHS.

SHARED DECISION MAKING
→ Engaging the patient in the decision making means they
are more likely to feel ownership for the decision and take
more responsibility for their own healthcare.

, EVIDENCE SHOWS that using patient-centred, shared decision-
making approach leads to:
→ Greater potential to improve health outcomes.
→ Boosts patient satisfaction with service received.
→ Increases patient knowledge and understanding of their
health status.
→ Increases adherence to a chosen treatment.
→ Can also bring significant reductions in cost.

WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?
ALL THE TIME!
1. COMMUNITY PHARMACIST
→ Over the Counter (OTC) sales / Responding to
Symptoms (RTS).
→ Counselling on new medicine / New Medicine Service
(NMS).
→ Medicines Use Review (MUR).
→ Emergency Hormonal Contraceptive (EHC).
→ Smoking Cessation.

2. HOSPITAL PHARMACIST
→ Medicine Reconciliation or Drug History.
→ Discussing treatment at the patient’s bedside.
→ Medicine information (over the phone).
→ In outpatient clinic.
→ In patients own home.

3. GP PRACTICE PHARMACIST
→ Running a clinic (e.g., asthma clinic, diabetes
clinic).
→ Medication review appointment.
→ Authorising new batch repeat prescriptions.

HOW LONG SHOULD A CONSULTATION TAKE?
The average …
→ GPs work within 10 minutes timescale. For pharmacist
there is no average or timescale as depends entirely upon
nature or setting of consultation.
→ But MAKE IT COUNT

Every time you speak to the patient you have the opportunity to
make a difference.
