MCA Semester – I
Sessional Examination (IR), February- 2021
3MCA105 : Computer Networks

Roll/ Supervisor’s initial
Exam No. with date

Max Marks: 40 Duration: 1 hour, 15 min

Instructions: 1. Attempt all the questions.
2. Figures to the right indicated full marks.
3. Draw neat sketches wherever necessary.
4. Assume suitable assumptions and specify them.

Answer the following:

Que. 1 Why Random access method is not superior to Controlled access method (8)
C1,2 in Medium access mechanism? Explain CSMA/CD (Carrier sense multiple
BL1 Access/collision detection) protocol and how it improves its performance
over CSMA.

Que. 2 “Performance would be improved in Selective-Repeat ARQ protocol as (8)
C1,2 compare to Go-Back-N ARQ Protocol”. Justify this statement with the
BL4 help of sliding window at sender and receiver side. Give proper scenari o
with diagram to support your answer. Compare each protocol for
following scenarios
i) when any Frame is lost
ii) when any Ack is lost

Que. 3 Solve the following : [8]

C1,2 i) What are the propagation time and the transmission time for a 50-
BL6 Mbyte message (an image) if the bandwidth of the network is 5 Mbps? (6)
Assume that the distance between the sender and the receiver is 6,000
km and that light travels at 2.4 × 108 m/s.

ii) Pure ALOHA and Slotted Aloha networks transmit 500-bit frames on a
shared channe l of 200 kbps. What are the requirement to make this (2)
frame collision-free on the Pure Aloha and Slotted Aloha Network?

Que. 4 Assume the 8 bit data-word 11110011. By using hamming code error (8)
C1BL6 detection and correction method generate all required check bits and give
the corresponding hamming code word for the above data- word. If a
single bit error is introduced at the second left-most bit, how would you
detect it?
